been cycling for 20 days now

however for the last 13 days i have had nitrite off the chart, yet in those 13 days i have had no rise in nitrate

ammonia is going from 5ppm to 0 in about 12 hours, maybe a bit longer.

is this normal?

Hang in there. It will happen. My tank is doing the same thing but my nitrates are at .05 my ammonia is at 0 but nitrites are slowly going down and it has been 3 weeks. Make sure you are feeding the tank a bit everyday. I put one cap full of pure ammonia everyday to feed the tank.

Cycleing takes a long time it feels like forever. But just keep checking it will go down.

For every 1 ppm of ammonia broken down, it converts to 2.7 ppm of nitrite.

So with just this, you can see that the bacteria that process nitrite are going to tale longer to colonize enough to process all of the nitrite.

Like stated above, just hang in there! :good:

Hi tom_os :)

I'm going to move your thread to the New to the Hobby section where we usually talk about cycling matters. You might not be new to this, but your tank is. ;)
