I don't understand why my nitrite levels are above 10 and nitrate are 120...keeping in mind my tap water levels are 0.5 nitrite and 0 nitrate.
Any explanation or advice will be greatly appreciated.

Hi guppyman1,

OK, a few questions and comments. Not sure what you mean by "Seeded with two rocks?" Could you elaborate on that more? Perhaps that somehow respresents a very successful mature media seeding and would explain why we're seeing signs of working biofilter activity (ammonia dropping and presence of nitrite and nitrate more or less immediately.)

One concern I have is that we generally advise that paper strip testing is worse than useless, it can be misleading, so I hate to see you trying to make decisions using this sort of information. One other more minor thing is that we have a few hints that the temp you are at might be a little high for the N-Bacs, so I'd bring that back down to 84F, rather than 87F.

By two rocks I mean I found two rocks (twice the size of a fist) sitting in a school aquarium that was not running but looked pretty mature so i just dropped them in for decoration not really to seed as the tank was not running with a filter.
