Fishelss Cycling 1 Day In Amonia Almost Down To 0

Replying to Miss Wiggle

No the tests were taken after 12 hours before adding the next amount of Ammonia.

Have been continuing with adding Ammonia twice a day and the ammonia levels regulalry drop back to 0.1 mg / litre

Curently nitrite is between 1.0 and 2.0 mg /litre
Nitrate levles around 60mg/litre.

Now the Big Problem

I now have a large amount of both green and brown algae in the tank.

What should I do about this, I am worried that by the time the filter is up and running the tank is going to need some major work to clean it up, is this normal?

Really appreciate any advice. I have been away for a week and my wife has been keeping up with the ammonia regime, so I will start regular testing again.

Anyone have any ideas?

I would start by cutting the ammonia additions back to once a day. You don't need to dose at twice a day to get good bacteria development. If you are running with the lights on in your tank a lot, it is time to reduce the light timing to fewer hours. Unless you are growing plants, there is no reason for the lights to be on at all.

I like all the suggestions, twice a day always required me to remember in the morning before leaving for work so it will be evening only going forward.

Lights have been on 11 hours a day, the tank is not yet planted so will cut the lights to 6 hours?

Thanks for the reply oldman.

Even when you first put your plants into the tank, try them at 6 hours before bumping it up in steps. I find that I often don't need more than 8 hours to have healthy plants. I am not one of the folks that goes crazy trying to grow a forest over night so nice sustained growth suits me fine.

How should I approach the algae removal? Following the instructions I will eventually do a 90% water change which will let me get to the glass, I will also likely replace the current rocks as I have gone off of those and have a large amount of bogwood but the gravel is also showing a layer of algae. I have a substrate of JBL Aqua Basis with gravel on top about 1/3 JBL to 2/3 Gravel?

Appreciate the advice.
