Fish You Wish Your Lfs Had

There's plenty of fish that I wish LFSs didn't stock such as Redtail cats, giant gouramis Mbu & Fahaka Puffers and dyed jellybean parrots.

Likewise! add to that list clarias batrachus, anything that belongs in brackish water, arowana, oscars and common plecs!

I'd love to see freshwater flatfish in my lfs (true freshwater), as well as the rare rays with the tiny disc size. I could also really go for reasonably priced synodontis multipunctatus, tetraodon pustulatus and channa gachua.

There's a guy breeds multipunctatious and Petricolas near to me who sells them way cheaper than you'd pay for those in stores elsewhere. I've not gone to see his stock yet but I will.
I'd like to see more stringent guidelines laid down for fish stores and better training for the staff. And they should all have enough knowledge about the fish they have to give decent advice. And not sell tankbusters!
Hugs,
P.

Devario regina, danio burma sp, danio kerri, Danionella mirifica,

You think you like danios just a little Wolf?

My list, for the store in IL:

rasbora brigittae
betta smaragdina
betta imbellis
botia striata
DT betta splendens

For FL stores please add:

Decent harlequin rasboras
Endler's
Mosquito fish
Just better quality of what they have

I must be really lucky here in Nottingham.

There are about 3 decent places within 5 miles of me. 3 more within 15 miles. And Wharf Aquatics just 2 junctions up the M1.

I have no real gripes for what they don't stock, with a bit of searching I can find most anything. I just wish the prices were much more reasonable.
£15 for a Ctenopoma acutirostre is a current going rate at one store.
I picked mine up for £3 as it arrived as an oddball in a shipment of other fish for another store.

I reckon we're better off buying from each other, better quality, you can get most fish if you search and areprepared for a bit of travel.

I'm in the British Killifish Association. A bit specialist, but you get to buy the fish and eggs tonnes cheaper than any of the shops sell them for.

I'd like to see more sidthimunkii loaches, dwarf cichlids (not apisto's) and more killifish

Less Snakeheads, redtail cats, and "golden wonder" killifish.

I really like Trimar.co.uk I've yet to use them, but just check out that stock list !!!!!!

Mine does special orders if you want something he doesn't stock and I am pretty sure he can get most things. I am about to try and see i if he is able to get me a catfish to keep my other one happy.

Hi mikev :)

Corydoras are very popular and there are almost 300 different species of them, yet only a few of them can ever be found at lfs. A store that frequently carried unusual species would develop a regular clientèle of collectors. I live halfway out on Long Island and would make a trip to the city to get ones I don't have.

Any of the ones in my signature would probably sell well. (The care is the same for all of them and anyone who can keep one can keep almost all of the others in their tanks.) The miniature corys: C. hastatus, C. habrosus and C. pygmaeus are rarely found in lfs, but sell quickly online. Any of the C. aeneus variations, such as the blacks and lazer corys would sell well and bring a good price too.

Where is this store?

I actually wish that my shop didn't have so many tempting, beautiful fish ! I'm very greatful, though it's always hard going in there and only buying what I intended to buy. Window shopping is still fun though :D

my LFS has an over abundance of zebra loaches

Hi Inchworm,

Corydoras are very popular and there are almost 300 different species of them, yet only a few of them can ever be found at lfs.
--- Most likely, the main problem is that I know very little about them. He has some and next time I'm there, I'll find out which ones and let you know.

A store that frequently carried unusual species would develop a regular clientèle of collectors. ---Exactly, this is why this thread, and hopefully it is of use to some other store in another city. While I could make some suggestions about loaches and barbs, corys or small plecs are beyond me.

(Some "unusual species" ideas seemingly worked well for him--like making sure that striped khulis are available most of the time. One failed badly: I convinced him to get Odessa Barbs...so now I have a beautiful shoal in my tank, but the same barbs in the store tank refuse to show colors, no matter what was tried, so of course nobody looks at them.)

Any of the ones in my signature would probably sell well. -- I'll pass this to him, together with tje entire thread printout, and put a big (!) next to your post. If there is anything good to report, will PM you.

Where is this store?

Queens Blvd, not far from the LIE exit.

Same problem with me now, I'm mostly down to window shopping and looking for exceptionally nice fish of the kind I already have (like a khuli with an unusual pattern.)
