Fish Turning Black

by keeping these fish in the right environment they will be healthier and have better colours and better fry.

If i let my water deteriorate for a about 3 weeks the colours on my fish start to fade from full blown mating colours to the same as the fish in the shops.

Thanks for all of the advice. These are great fish and swim to the glass when anyone walks by. One of the reasons why we got them. Haven't seen any sign of aggression yet. Hopefully it stays that way.

Best of luck but you will have aggression problems even a female auratus can wipe out a tank if its in a bad mood.

They have a reputation that is well deserved when the do attack they go for the stomach of other fish i would have to say remove them sooner or later they will kill

Im tellin you man put a big ass RTS in there now, you will thank me later when your fish are well behaved.

That list should not work at all, how do you know what to keep the ph at ?

I find almost every freshwater fish can be adapted to any water condition. Such as Mbunas in water with a PH of 7. They will still live a long healthy life.

When I first got my E-Yellows mized in my 30 gallon with some cummunity fish and a jewel. PH was around 7 +/-. Would flucuate sometimes. Was fine for the couple years I had them in there. I then got my 55 gal.

Agreed. Speaking from experience here.

Adding a RTS is not the best solution in this case i'm afraid. A RTS is no match for an adult Auratus or most other adult Mbuna for that matter. RTS are aggressive in terms of community fish but do very little actual damage due to their small mouths, Mbuna on the other hand can do serious damage with their large mouths and sharp teeth.

The shark would undoubtedly be the boss whilst the Mbuna are juveniles but that simply won't last. :/

Yeah i agree my RTS is a pain in the ass sometimes when i see him chasing my cories and my tetras but he's never really done any damage to any of them. When i look back to how agressive my mbuna were as Ferris has already said they are no match for mbuna.

I agree thet as adults RTS mouths are too small to really damage a cichlid but when raised togeather, the cichlids are all so afraid of him now as adults they simply behave better. You ever heard of the way elephants are trained for the circus? As juveniles they are chained up with a big heavy chain that they get so accustomed to that as adults, the only thing that is used to restrain them is a rope. A rope that an animal of that size could easily break, but they are so accustomed to the chain that they grew up with they wont even try. I think maybe the same principle applies here. You get an adult RTS when your Mbuna's are still small, by the time they reach adulthood, they are so accustomed to being dominated over, they simply wont act out as they normally would. All I can say is that this has been my experience and its worked amazingly well.

It's an interesting theory and i'm glad it works for you but it is very much the exception to the rule, which is a point that i think is essential to make for anyone reading this thread and considering stocking options.

I'm truly amazed that your tank works SG1 and if all the fish are full-grown adults, it's quite an achievement. :good:

So far my 2 aratus fish in my tank are doing fine. They are not adults in any way yet though. I got all my fish when they were babies, after a few weeks they were showing signs of aggrasion toward each other, then another month later they seemed to calm down.

Now, about 3 months into it, they don't show any aggrasion. Mainly only territorial actions if a fish comes to close they will charge for a split second. That is even rare though. I guess we will see how they continue to do reaching the adult stage.

They'll be fine, just keep a vigilant eye on them:)
