ok, this is more a topic about growth of fish being stunted if tank to small...

This is partly untrue, yes fish growth can become slowed down considerably if the tank is to small, but if the tank is of their natural habitat, the fish will grow at a their natural rate.

'experiments' have been done, and it shows how fish growth is determined on several factors, size of tank being one of the main contributing factors.

basicly if you put a large fish in a tank..ie a 8" golden laoch in a 8g tank, it will continue growing, as longa s the fish is fed, theyw ill grow.

well that atleast what i've come to find.

i knwo many people have strong opinnions on this, but this is more a agree or disagree thing, let em know you're findings on this?

Can you post the study that performed these "experiments"?

And no, this wont help your silver dollar thread.

Honestly what you just posted made no sence.Do you understand the words stocking (in fish terms) and why people select a suitable amount of fish to 'stock' their tank with? It's because with to many fish the ammonia, nitrite and nitrate will increase, this will stunt and kill fish...

Regardless, fish should be stocked in tanks suitable for their size so that they can live long, healthy, comfortable lives. Regardless of what any study finds, that does not make it ok to stock an 8'' fish in an 8g tank. If somone shoved you in an 5'x5' cage, you probably wouldn't stop growing either, but you would be very uncomfortable and very unhealthy. I would like to see this study that your talking about. i dont dout it's findings one bit, but i would like to see how they went about testing this.

ha ha ha ha.. so you think that because they won't physically "outgrow" the tank (i.e. make it spit open), that it's okay?

this thread has about as much point as the salt and pepper fishie luuurve story.

If you put a cow in a small box (aka veal) the cow doesn't stop growing as long as certain conditions are met...but it does end up a very weak (aka tender) animal because it cannot move enough to allow proper muscle growth.

*edit* Just trying to prove that just because an animal can live that way doesn't mean it should. I think veal is a perfect example of how we will torture an animal for own "pleasure"...

My mothers friend has had a goldfish for 18 years, It has been in the same 5 gallon tank on its own, It is only around 5 inches long.

My father has a 6 foot tank, With the same type of goldfish which is 4 years old. It is larger than my hand length and height wise!!!

If you keep a fish in a tank that's too small, stunting will occur. That's just scientific fact. Your fish deserve the opportunity to live a happy and healthy life.

ahh no, my fish are all in tanks which are by far too big for them, this topic is just to see peoples opinnions on the matter!
