Fish Tank Setup

because they just want your money. you buy the fish, they die, you buy more its a win win situation for them

2 apistos or rams, 2 max, it is not big anough for malawis, you could try small shell dwellers
so why did my fish shop say that 5 cichlids would be ok in a 55 litre fish tank

because your fish shop is lying and want a decent packet at the end of the day, 5 is an odd number, not really good IMO with dwarf cichlids as one will be picked on if they pair off.

as i said 2 max and then some other community fish

so what fish like a high ph level in the fish tank

Its a freshwater tank, and is 55 litres. My local fish shop said i could put some malawi cichlids in the tank an I asked what stuff should I put in the tank so I put some ocean rock in the tank

that cant be! my tank is a 60l tank and is no-where near as big as yours!

as said, its missing some plants and colour

What are the dimensions of the tank, it really does look bigger than 55 litres??

It just looks like a standard 2x1x1 tank to me, - The filter is either a filter 2 or maybe 3 and in general heaters are usually around 12inches in length

As said it is way too small for most african species, unless you can get your hands on some a decent sized group of Tanganyika Multies,
if you try and add 5 malawi cichlids to this setup they will simply get killed off, and tbh you will also need a much bigger filter

As said South American Blue Rams would be fine in that sized tank but you would have to lose the rocks as this will buffer the ph at a level too high for the rams.

Kribensis may also be an option (although the tank ideally should be a bit bigger) if you an find an established pair they should be ok in there

55 Liters is too small for any of the malawi cichlids. They all grow too big, and they love to swim and need plenty of room for that. I'm sorry your LFS has filled you with dreams, but sadly it isn't possible for a 55 liter tank.

African rift lake fish (this includes lake malawi) like a high pH. They share their liking of high pH with marine fish and corals. Most other tropical fish like a neutral to slightly alkaline pH, and most South American fish prefer slightly acidic water.

That isn't to say that they can't be kept outside of their preferred pH. The issue here is that the tank is too small.

lol, a beginner starting with malawi cichlids i bet he hasnt even a clue about Ph. If its 55 gal then yes ok, providing you know the requirements of these fish and that you will find it hard to control aggression, they require a huge filter in order to add more fish to balance out the aggressive attitude
