when i move away to go to university, id still like to keep fish, but im wondering what sort of tank i should keep if im renting a place with friends?

any thoughts would be welcome?

small community species, OR (my prefered option) a 60 litre with 4 dwarf puffers with good filtration or a 100 litre with 6 dwarf puffers and good filtration.

dwarf puffers are highly intelligent fish, they are very inquisitive and soon know there owner, they will sit at the front of the tank with their snouts pressed to the glass watching you  they eat snails too and plants and lots of caves should be provided (coconuts are great for this!)

but the only other live stock you could keep with them in a 60 litre would be 6 or so ottos and in a 100 litre 10 or so ottos

and nothing else, some people say theyve had shrimp successfully with DP's but normally they will all pick on the shrimp and kill it. then eat it...

if you do go DP route only have 1 male per tank and the rest females

Basically depend's on where you live, space and how much room mate's like fish!!!
I went to a uni flat at the weekend to help with there fish, there was four flat mates that clubbed together for a 4ft/2ft/2ft :good:

you have to take into consideration the amount of space you will have. do you have an apt yet? or do you have a dorm.
keep in mind the amount of free space you have once you move in. once you have that all figured out then you select a tank you can keep comfortably in your space. if you get two big of a tank in a cramped space then it will be all fish and no space for you or your room mate.
i would wait until you have a space picked out then decide what sized tank you can get. from there come back and we will help you pick out fish that will get in the tank.

I was in halls last year and had no room for anything other than a 10gallon tank. Easy enough to support too as a good sturdy table could hold one rather than having to buy a cabinet.

2 things to consider:

1 - A lot of landlords won't allow you to keep *any* pets, including fish

2 - What is going to happen to the fish when you leave Uni for holidays?
