After my last attempt at trying to make a list, I decided to get a dedicated tank just for my catfish so now it's time to rethink the stock in my community tank. I will have a mixture of fake/real plants till I get the hand of them then try to move to all real. I went to the good fish store today outside of town and wrote down all the fish that I thought would look good in my tank. The tank is a 125 gallon ( 72x18x22 ) or 473 liters. howmanyfish.com has my tank size setup for 108 inches of slender fish, and 65 inches of full bodied fish. I'm pretty sure these all count as slender, but you never know. Heres the fish I would like to get in the tank, but if I have to remove something I will

Red fire shrimp/Green Algae eating Shrimp
Diamond Tetra
Cherry Barb
Glass catfish
Neon Dwarf Rainbowfish
Lemon Tetra*
Penguin Tetra
Corydora*
Harlequin Rasbora*
Blue Columbian Red Tail Tetra
Tiger Barb*
Pearl Gourami*
One Betta

* = Highest priority, I reallllly want these in the tank if they can make it.

I know some of these need schools to be happy, and the tank will be large enough to please them

Thanks

1st of all.... What a tank! You absolutely MUST share some pictures of that beast once its up and running.

There may be more flaws, but the only thing I can see, is that your gourami may see shrimp as food, and tiger barbs might nip the fins of a gourami. But the tank is certainly bit enough for them to stay out rack others way.

Ya I wasn't thinking about shrimp until I saw them at the store, I just threw them on the maybe list but if I dont get them, no harm done. I know the Tiger Barbs like to nip fins but I read in lots of places if I had 7 or so they SHOULD stay away from the gouramis. The shrimp are pretty cheap anyways they were just funny to see dart around the tank at the store

edit: Ive added a single betta to the list since Ive read that they can be good fish in a large community tank with no other fish with long colourful fins and I dont think my list has any of those

The betta and the gourami will fight, the tiger barbs may nip the gourami, the tiger barbs may freak out the more sensitive species like the glass catfish. Corydoras, Lemon Tetras, Harlequins and Pearl gourami will be fine I see no problems and maybe some small catfish like Otocinclus.

The betta was just a random thought, no loss about it really. I know the Tiger Barbs MIGHT be mean to the Gourami but if I had 7-10 of them they should be nice from what I read. I read the glass catfish were sensitive so I wasnt expecting to put them in the 125, maybe my 30 gallon. My original setup had Harlequin, Tiger barbs, Corydoras, Kuhli loachs, and Pearl Gourami. But after seeing the Lemon Tetra and other tetra species at the store, I think this tank will be a heavy Tetra population. Just need to figure out how many of each. Was planning 15 or so Harlequin, 5 Kuhli, 6 cory but dunno about the rest

Within the limits I use maths to decide how many fish, if it's an aggressive species obviously one or two but if it's a shoaling species like tetras I use multiplication. So take for example your lemon tetras and harlequins, they're lengths are 6cm and 5cm.

5 x 12 = 60
6 x 10 = 60
So I would get 12 harlequins and 10 lemons if you think you want more the bump up the numbers a bit.

5 x 24 = 120
6 x 20 = 120
So 24 harlequins and 20 lemon tetras if you want somewhere in the middle,

5 x 18 = 90
6 x 15 = 90
Just like that.

As far as kuhlis go I think you can keep quite a few because their bioload isn't massive because of their shape.

So if it were me I would get:
2-4 Pearl Gourami
18-24 Harlequin Rasbora
15-20 Lemon Tetra
10-15 Corydoras Sterbai/Adolfoi
10 Kuhlis
10-15 Otocinclus

I am NOT an expert and I have a tank less than half the size of yours so listen to others opinions especially if they're about this post. If you start buying these fish then the tank looks full to you, stop and ask.

I've kept tiger barbs in large groups, from 8-14, and the group setting never kept them from being fin nippers with slower moving fish. They're not exactly incessant in picking on others, but I myself would never keep them with gouramis or angels.

I did like the activeness of the tiger barbs, but I guess I could let them go for more harlequin or lemon tetra. I do have a spare 30g maybe I will put some in that

Any opinions on diamond tetra or Columbian red fin? They looked nice at the store. I read alot if my tank can take 5ppm of ammonia down to 0 in 12 hours I can fully stock at once. The fish store I plan to buy these all from is two hours away so I was planning on a single trip when I finally get the tank ready
