75 Gallon Tank, quite a few (30+) mollies, 4 cory cats, 2 chinese algea eaters, 2 clown loaches. 5 decent sized plants and very well filtered (Biowheel 330 and 170 and magnum 350 canister filter). 10% water changes done monthly. Water tests are in acceptable ranges. Ammonia below .25.

We're having a problem with the fish rubbing themselves against things rubbing their scales off. Any ideas? We've treated for ick and fungus with Fungus Clear Tank Buddies and Ick Clear Tank Buddies. We did the ick first, then the fungus a week later. A water 10% change change was done 2 days before fungus treatment. We've also added aquarium salt (normally do monthly, but we put it in 5 days early, right after the water change).

Not sure what to do now. The fish are still rubbing against things and the
fungus clear was put in 2 1/2 days ago.

Here's a few pictures:

Thanks,

I would have said Ich but you've treated for that. The Ich parasite does have several stages of growth, one of which is when it's 'free swimming' in the tank. That's the only time it can be killed by the treatment. Could it possibly be Ich that has just missed the treatment?
I had Ich in my coldwater tank and we treated the tank over several days to make sure to catch the parasite when it was most susceptible.

Don't quote me on anything as i'm only a newbie too but that's my opinion. Hopefully one of the experts on here will solve the mystery :)

Hope they get betteer soon.

You have to treat for ich for a while, I found it's not a quick fix and patience is a virtue. :)

fish rubbing/flicking could be ich, velvet, stress or related to poor water quality.

Try treating with the fungus treatment for a few more days to see if it helps and then do a 25% water change. If it is water related, changing 25% of the water every other day for a week will have essentially replaced all of the old water.

Should we treat with just the ick treatment or go with a parasite treatment in case it's not ick? Something like Jungle Labs Tank Buddy Parasite Clear?

How often do you add the treatment?

Thanks,
Mike

Couldnt agree more :D

P.T.

Sorry, dunno if i missed something, but did you put salt in with the Cory's?
I may be wrong, but i heard that salt is bad for these fish (burns them) as they are scaless?
Just to be safe i wouldnt so down that road.

Cories are not usually that subseptible to ICH, more likely a bacterial infection or different parasite of some sort?

Again, i am a newbie myself, so you are probs better off waiting for an expert to come along.

I am having a similar prob with my Gouramis at the moment, as you can see in my sig, i still have no real solution as to why they were scratching so much.
I was told more likely a bacterial infection or flukes of some kind....

HTH and hope your little guys recover soon

We're still treating. We just added parasite clear. How long should we wait before doing a water change and another treatment.

Another fish has rubbed off scales on it's bottom, the front side of it's belly. :dunno:

There's no visable sign of anything except the rubbed off scales.

:(

Is there a happy medium with mollies and cory's? Mollies absolutely love the salt treatments, they bath themselves in the cups right on the salt when we add it. Our cory's have shown no signs stress from the salt treatments, what should we watch for if it's adversely effecting them?

Just keep a close eye on your fish. They'll start acting much different if somethingis wrong. As far as gobys and salt, the fan dance goby is brackish water. :dunno: about the rest of the gobys.
