Ich is a parasite that is tiny. It floats in the water and will attach on to a fish. Once attached it gets under the fish's protective layer which it then feed off the fish. The white spots you see are the same parasite which has grown bigger from feeding off the fish.
The parasite at some point then drop off the fish on to the floor where it will release possibly another one hundred in to the water which will then start all over again. The meds is the best way to go about it. It doesnt kill the parasite when it is attached to the fish, but when they fall off and on to your substrate, split and release the new load, the meds kill those.
Upping the water temp should be done gradually. E.g. 1 degree per hour. If you crank the temp up straight from 25 to 30 then you could harm your fish. Always be careful with temp changes. The temp increase doesnt actually kill the parasite, it simply speeds up their life cycle which is why I recommend the meds rather than just relying on the temp increase.
The meds are very simple and are often just a two dose treatment. Add the required measurement on day one, then again on day four. Leave the temp at 30 for around 10 days in total and it should be complete.
Good luck!
