How do you guys make it with everything so expensive? I can barely get by here in U.S.!

Insurance is $110 per month for a mazda 3, and gas is at ~2.49 per gallon where I'm at. We get by but it's tough. I guess in the U.K. there is a better mass transit system than in most places in the U.S. I've got to drive everywhere. I loved it over there when I visited a few years back.

I am paying about almost $2000 per year for auto insurance - on a '03 minivan and a '96 toyota corolla - there is no such thing as $100 per year car insurance.

However, most things are more money over there, after the exchange rate, no denying it.

we dont get buy, nearly the entire population is in some form of debt!! lol sorry for the pun...

some places in the UK have a great mass transit system:

or example, London. i love travel in london. I missed a bus one day, another was along in 5 minutes.

Where I live in particular:

I work 7am - 3pm or 3pm - 11pm shifts.

There are NO buses to get me in for 7am and NO buses to get me home after 11pm, unless im prepared to WALK more than 1.5 miles. at 6am in the pissing freezing rain, its not funny.

at other times when buses do run, the are once every half hour unless its the evening, in which case every hour. they are often up to 30+ minutes late or 10 minutes early.

and the journey from my house to my work takes approximately an hour. when i worked 9-5 I could cycle home, shower, shave make and eat my tea before the bus got me home in rush hour.

So reasonably, I drive.

I am about to purchase a house. After paying the mortgage, council tax, road tax, car loan, buildings & contents insurance, car insurace, petrol, elec, gas etc im left with around £30 a month from my wages.

The average wage in blighty is meant to be £16000. is it f... buggery. its about £12000, but there are a substantial number of £200,000+ eaners to raise that 12K up to 16K.

If I earned 16K I'd be laughing at this thought of purchasing a house.
