Hi Jasper...

We are just setting up our first tank (still cycling  ). While we are waiting for the cycle to finish we have been visiting every LFS we can find in Dorset and Hampshire, in readiness for when we can start introducing stock.

So.... Don't know if it's what you want to hear, but Maidenhead @ Wimborne is by far the best LFS in the region! We might be beginners, but it doesn't take long to get an idea of a good LFS when you visit a few! They have THE best kept tanks/stock we have seen. And they take the time to advise and know their stuff.

There is another slightly larger 'Maidenhead' in Fair Oak, Southampton. A little way, but they use pure Oxygen for transporting stock, which they assured us would give no problem in bringing stock home (60 miles to Dorchester). Having said that, they didn't seem to have quite as pristene tanks as Wimborne. But I guess with 100 more tanks (according to website) that perhaps should be expected. Lovely selection of stock though.

Coming down the scale...

Some others near to you that are worth a look are Southern Aquatics and Pets. They are in Creekmoor, Poole. A good number of tanks. Some nice oddballs too!

Of the three in Weymouth, we use Dorset Aquatics on Littlemoor Road. Their stock and tanks just looks so much more healthy. And they SEEM TO CARE!

Further out there is Wheathill Garden Centre, Wheathill Lane, Milborne Port, Sherborne. Nice fish house, but they have just changed hands, so stock is slightly limited. But still worth keeping an eye on.

Basically, you are not going to beat Wimborne though. There are others near you, (eg Three Legged Cross), that we have visited and personally would not wish to use. But I guess you've done those anyway, hence the request ;)

Anyways, hope this helps a little...

Hi Jasper :hi:

I have to say I agree with you and Rob n Vic, Maidenhead Aquatics in Wimbourne has exceptional fish but they are slightly higher in prices as well. I use a couple of small independant LFS. The first one is in Charminster Rd, Bournemouth near the " Richmond" pub. I'm sure he has been there over 20 yrs, my brother has used them since he had his first tank 16 yrs ago, his prices are very reasonable and we've never had any problems with his fish.

The second one has only recently opened (october i think) and he seems to specialise in Malawi Cichlids but carries all other fish too, and he even sells terrapins, turtles, snakes and lizards etc :S Anyhow he seems good too and prices are reasonable. He is situated at 519 Christchurch Rd, Boscombe near Icelands and Argos. Website link http://www.tropicalfishworld.co.uk

I have recently been to a fish shop in Kinson Rd, Bournemouth. This shop seems fine but i've not been there offen and only this week just brought some fish from there, so fingers crossed

I also have used Southern Aquatics but the one in Somerford, Christchurch. There tank and accessories are really well priced but I brought a couple of female guppies from them and they had very bad whitespot and both died within 1 week :( But then you live n learn lol Now I carefully check the tank that I would be buying from.

Well I'll stop waffling now, I hope this is of use to you and not too far away.

Im on the other side of Southampton, in Gosport , and the best place for me is either Stubbington Aquatics in errr...Stubbington.... or for gravel etc....Pets at Home in Titchfield.

Dont have any huge aquatic specialists around here.
