So came back from a day away to find a female apistogramma cacatouides on the brink of death.

Symptoms;

Fish lying on side not moving, gasping.

Fish does not have any visable problems, colour is fine, no wounds or damage, no swollen/distended stomach, nothing wrong with gills or eyes, no inflamed anus.

I think the only thing I can think of is internal bacteria. The other fish are fine, water was tested a few days ago and was perfectly fine.

Nitrate 20ppm
Nitrite 0
Ammonia 0
Cl2 0

I have no treatments for bacteria, but do have an anti-parasite med. Nowhere open to buy meds at this hour.

Fish has been isolated, going to do a 30% wc, may treat with the anti-parasite.

Any thoughts or ideas?

Hi FreedomFighter :)

A water change us usually a good idea but don't treat a fish with any medication unless you are sure of the diagnosis. Using the wrong medicine will just weaken it more.

I hope you are able to save it.

She's already gone. Checked her over in the light, no visable signs whatsoever.

Retested water, have had an ammonia spike, it was at 0.25. Must've been plant matter. All other fish looking fine atm, did a 30% wc, will do another after a retest in the morning.

Unsure on whether the spike has caused the fatality, maybe it has been combined with stress or a bacterial infection. Will be incredibly angry at myself if the ammonia spike has caused the loss.

this is what i think is happening with my golden ram :-(
i dont think she will make it either.
have no clue what to do either as i cannot even seperatee it as my 35L is home to guppy fry.

she is on her side laying on a plant as i types.
so i think she is a gonner
