Hey,

As some of you may already know, I will be purchasing some fish from a local hobbyist. I want to bring them with me to my home on my little island. I need something to put into the water, as I will not have pure oxygen like the pet stores have. I can't find anything, i've been looking for some Oxygen tablets, but no one seems to have em. Anyone know something I could use? How long could my Disus last in a bag without any of the pure oxygen? The plane ride will be 7+ hours.

Thanks,

DL

So ur sorted now?

Was gonna say dont over load the bags of course, i prefer 1 fish per bag and add some ammo lock this locks away the ammonia from the water and makes things much safer, However if your adding pure oxygen this will react with ammo lock and kill the fish.

I've had fish in bags for 2 days just using ammo lock and find it better then oxygen as u can just open the bags if you not sure their is enough.

As Helter says above plus Place one fish per bag with 1/3 water to 2/3 oxygen and tie off then place this inside another bag. (double bagging) and place inside a poly box. Are you carrying the fish as hand luggage. 7 and a half hours by plane....seems like you will be crossing international borders, (sometimes you need a permit to transport fish) If they are going in the hold of the plane you will need heatpacks.

Thanks.

It's a good thing you told be about the Ammo Lock, I was going to use it! I can't open the bag, as I can't take it as a carry-on (liquid rule). I will be triple bagging each fish, and adding a Tom Airstone

well i dont no about that, it says that it releases oxygen for a month, so it prob does it really slow so you should be ok.

disculsova have you ever been on tropical fish 101? your name looks familar

Travelling as much as I do and knowing baggage handlers well as a result I think you need a seriously strong case too, BUT you need to speak to the Department of Agriculture, you cannot for SURE take live animals into the Caymans without the appropriate checks and documents, you also need to confirm if the airline will even let you.

It isn''t about whether you want to take the risk or not there is legislation governing the transport of live animals.

Here is a link to a site that gives far more info - including links to the appropriate people. http://www.caymannewresident.com/page_id_14.html

Thanks for the concern. I have talked to the Dept. of Agricultre and Environment, and came out with a permit to bring them in.
