Missed a couple guppies bout a week ago.....opened up the filter today to put carbon in and found them swimming happily in there......decided to take the trays out and check for more and found a few cherry shrimps too ! The intake nozzle grille is on......now wondering how the hell they got in there......also how they been coping with the flow and no lights for so long........anyone had this problem ?

Lack of lights is not an issue. To stop this from happening again, you will want to put a bit of sponge over the intake. The sponge will also slow the current around the intake, by spreading out the suction over a larger area.

Thought about that , but, when that sponge gets clogged with muck, it's gonna need cleaning......my tank is 34" high and the intake is 4" above the floor....so getting to it will not be an easy task......

My baby bristle noses end up in my filter and I know how the little sneaks manage it. If the water has been filled to high in the tank and is lapping at the inflow from the HOB filter the bristle noses just swim up the current. It hasn't hurt them getting in the filter just an annoyance factor trying to herd them back out and into the tank. My cherry shrimp also get up into my filters and they are most likely going for a free ride up the intake tube (but it beats me how they survive the impellor ) and funnily enough the shrimp are also quite happy to stay in the confines of the filter, I think it must be like shrimp heaven in the filter all that yummy stuff and no one else to have to share it with.
Not sure how a full grown guppy would have got up into a filter unless you had a HOB filter and left the top off it and the guppies managed to jump in to it from the tank. Even my newborn guppies don't succed in getting into my filters.

Cut a piece of panyhose ladies tights and secure it over the intake with a rubber band - its easy to take off and rinse if it gets clogged.

my shrimp end up in my external all the time, every time i do maintenance on it i just pour the water thru a net and pop the shrimp back in the tank, had a black khuli loach in there last week! all seem fine to live in there for a bit... i tried the tights over the end but they kind of sucked in and caused a blockage...

I tried the tights thing, but it clogged up the intake & stopped the filter input working properly.
Since I took it off I've lost no fry into the filter
