Do you have any fish in that tank Rustage? If you do, you are doing very well at keeping your levels low for them.

Hi OldMan47. Yes I have 4 fish in the tank now and some plants. I'm not really doing anything to be honest. I've changed out 24 litres of water yesterday and thats about it. Just checking the levels.

If i were you i'd be changing a minimum of 40% per day, just because your water stats look pretty stable your media may not be growing the good bacteria just yet, keep your eye on the stats as you are doing but i'd still do a large water change every day. Your in for a hard slog, good luck my friend, stick with it, the reward at the end of the day is amazing.

Hey,
I'm fish in cycling too.
i have been doing this since april (I got a 20 gallon for my birthday on 4/1)
I was told to do a 50% to 40% 3 times a day everyday. I been doing that for only like...not long,
I've been doing that for a week but I lost a whole school of tiger barbs in the beginning. I have 6 black phantom tetras a ruby shark 4 ghost shrimp and 3 snails. I only lost 1 shrimp so My water wasn't too bad.
Anyway I wanted to tell you to hang in there. I didn't do any water changes yesterday but my ammonia was still at 0ppm so HOORAY!!! :yahoo: I think I'm closing in on the end.
I did it and for the most of it I didn't even have a test kit so your starting off better than I did Hang in there. :good:

i fish in cycled with danios and rasboras and only lost 1 danio, wouldnt wanna be doing it with big expensive fish and will never fish in cycle again, this website is a godsend,i cant believe the LFS's dont provide this kind of advice when ur in the shop buying ur fish.

Keep the 50% changes up,twice a day and u will keep ur ammonia and nitrite below 0.25 (especially seeing as u only have 4 young fish in a fair sized tank)

Could u get mature media from the LFS?

I have been assuming that LFS stands for Live fish store, am I right or even close. And it is messed up that they don't tell you that you should cycle your fish tank with no fish in it. I didn't go by the store though. I went by the instructions that came with the tank but they are no better then the store. I use to work at Wal-Mart and I told customers that they should wait 2 weeks before adding fish  I was wrong but the training I took told me nothing about how to advice customers all well. This makes me not want to trust companies anymore.

Usually we mean local fish store or local fish shop. It depends where you are what they call a place that sells fish. In the US they are sold in stores but in the UK they are sold in shops. It works out nice that the 3 letter abbreviation works in both places since those are the main places that are represented on this forum. There are also a few people from Australia, Canada, and smaller numbers from other places with english speaking people. I think I have even seen a few posts from Hong Kong.

G'DAY MATE from down under

im 4 weeks into my fish-in cycle, some times it feels like im going backwards but apparently im not but my lfs tells me he knows best but im the one keeping all 12 of my babies alive not him due to the advice ive received her at TFF, so whatever you do dont give UP

LFS logos should be "come on in , so i can rip you off" "lol"

I was advised by my lfs that JBL Denitrol should be used while doing a fish in cycle - can any of you please tell me why and what it actually does.

Fish seem very happy at the moment, however, there seems to be a minor turf war going on over the gravel bottom.

JBL Denitrol is another "bacteria in a bottle" and as such, most of us would probably consider it snake oil.

~~waterdrop~~

Brilliant. Snake oil or not, at least I now know what it is.

I bought a new tank today and will be setting it up this evening. The octaganol tower just wasn't good enough for my Cichlid friends! :) Their new home is a nice 200 litre bow fronted jobbie - will post a photo later. Going to run my existing filter in conjunction with a new external one. Very excited.

Nice, glad you got a good tank for the Cichlids!

They will love you now!

What a job getting the fish from that octagon tank without a net. My wife and I struggled to get it done without flooding the house. Managed to get it done though and the fish are now in their new home. The new external filter had 2 taps missing, so its not yet up and running fully, but the old filter seems to be doing the job. Will get the missing taps and get the external online later today. Did a 50% water change while moving the fish. Now we have to decide on a theme and start buying some rocks etc...
