Does anyone know what type of platy this is?

Thanks.

It looks orange with some dark spots to me.
Sorry, I have no idea what name that color variation has been given by the trade. It is a very nice looking platy though.

It's a "painted" platy. That's what I was told at almost every pet shop in oklahoma. I've had some issues identifying them also, haha. They come in a variety of colors, I just found out! [ : :good:

hi this type of platy is an orange calico. sometimes called painted, but it is a natural occurance rather than being modified by a breeder

As fish48 says. These are not naturally occurring fish in the wild, they are breed in captivity and developed from platy/swordtail crosses.

This is a color morph of fish that are probably some combination of various Xiphophorus ancestors. That means there is no scientific name, such as a species name, for them. The name they are given by the fish trade is intended to inspire people to buy them. I was at a fish auction today and had some creamsicle mollies for sale. I saw some almost identical mollies offered by someone else who was calling their fish lyre tailed gold dust mollies. My own have a pronounced lyre shaped tail, a partial sail fin and of course are a golden color. I was using the traditional pet shop name for mine and the other seller had decided it was not exciting enough. These color morphs change names as often as many Hollywood personalities change spouses.
If you are enjoying your fish, don't worry too much what the aquarium trade has decided to call them this week. Next week it will be something different anyway.

Thanks everyone! I was just curious, because she looked so unique. She was in a mix of a bunch of platys labeled "sunset and mickey mouse platies", but when I googles that, I didn't see what I had gotten! :) Thanks again.

Mickey mouse platies are a common name that actually has a meaning to most of us. If you look at their caudal peduncle, the place where the tail attaches, you will see 3 distinct black circular spots that form a pattern that looks sort of like a cartoon mickey mouse head laying on its side.
