Hi,

Still haven't got my fish tank yet  a new fence and car service have put a stop to that!!!!

Plus i can't get the rio 400 i wanted, it's just toooo big for my lounge, i'm having to downsize to the rio 300. Still should be big enough for full sized loaches and a plec.

These are the fish i would like in my tank:

1 common / royal plec
6-10 Neon Tetras
3/4 Gouramis
4 Zebra Loaches

I might hold off getting a plec untill my tank conditions and experience are good enough to look after a royal plec.

I love the look of cichlids, are there any softwater varieties which would be kind to the fish listed above (discounting angelfish)

Any comments welcome :hey:

Sounds like you live in a house the same size as ours!

We nearly went for a rio 400 too, but it just wouldn't fit, so we settled for a second-hand rio 240 instead. It's cycling now.

We have two royal plecs and they're well worth the wait! Beautiful fish and very active

You could get discus. The king of the freshwater tropical aquarium world. One of the most difficult and sensitive fish to keep, but incredibly gorgeous and well worth it. I will soon be getting several myself. :)

Also you might want to look into cardinal tetras as opposed to the neons because they are (in my opinion) much prettier, and they do better with the Discus. IF you decide to get them of course.

Discus do look good and come in an amazing variety of colours but as you say they are very sensitive to water conditions and tank mates.

As a beginner i'll stick to my plecs and clown loaches :D

I do likr the look of cardinals, i think i might try and get two shoals of neon and cardinal.

More input on cool fish would be great. :fun:

I thought you said Zebra Loaches?

Oh well, Khulis and and Horse Faces Loaches are always good!

Botia Striata

Platies, mollies and other stuff! If you really want to speed up the cycling of the tank a little, you could put in some guppies.

What is rio? What is that in gallons?
The rio 300 is a tank made by juwel; it comes with stand, filter, lights etc

It is a 300 litre tank which roughly equates to 80 U.S. Gallons

Iwould love to have the rio 400 / 105 US Gallons, but its just too big

Isnt a 105 gallon tank 4ft set up just like 80 gallon, just a little wider
105 gallon tank is 151 x 62 x 51 cm
80 gallon tank is 121 x 62 x 51 cm

When the tank is on its stand that extra 30 cm in length would make the leading edge of the tank look very imposing in my living room!!!

You'll have to be careful keeping some cichlids with the Tetras, some may eat them. You could try Keyholes or Rams. Both quite nice. ;)

Are there many cichlids that can be kept in a community aquarium?

I love the cichlids which come from the hardwater african lakes; i know these are out of the question.

But i have heard of softwater cichlids which look like there hardwater cousins and are supposed to be less agressive.

Does anyone keep any softwater cichlids in a community aquarium?
