Ok, so when I bought these little critters they were barely an inch long. Was told by the LFS they were Siemese Flying Foxes. It has come to light from someone on this forum that they are not Siemese Flying Foxes but true SAE (is that Siemese Algae Eaters?) So can anyone expand on this for me please?

Here they are (please ignor the cory if you can, he just gets in all the photos)

arrrr, the horrid SAE. yes they are what you thought, they are siamese algea eaters.i would get rid as soon as possable as they become a pain in the but to look after.but do as you like. i rehomed mine after i realised what they were and replaced then with ottos, smaller, pieceful and eats algea.perfect replacment

My vote is that this is a Siamese Algae Eater. There's an algae eating barb that is very similar, but the true Siamese has the black lateral line extending through the fork of the tail, which is clearly visible in your picture.

Great link, thanks but I am still confused as this picture matches both the sae and the sff.

Hey, taking them back is not an option, would never do that. They are no problem they just chase each other from time to time and are no bother to others. They do a job and deserve thier home. Thank you for your opinion though

Umm...what's so terrible about Siamese Algae Eaters? You confusing them with Chinese Algae Eaters?

I think what the other poster is saying is that after they get a bit older and bigger, they stop eating algae, and start to eat other fishes slime coats and eyeballs.

Have a look in the species index under cyprinids (Amight only have Chinese Algae eaters in there)

Siamese Algae Eaters are great fish for algae control and totally peaceful...as the species index shows.

Sorry to jump in on this. Can I just ask the name of that cory in the 1st pic? My lfs got them in wild caught but didnt know the name, as I have lots of cories in my tanks I took the 2 hoping they would school or at least feel comfortable with my Peppered cories. Still havent been able to find out their name tho.

Oh btw it sounds like people are getting the Simese algae eater confused with the Chinese algae eater. The chinese is a bit of a terror but urs is fine.

I only bought 2 cos thats all they had left btw.

I use to have these fish and they would chase each other non-stop.

Super Coley that read so gross Lol eating eyeballs just sounds so awful... bit like jelly maybe? To me it seems always a slight risk with algae eaters that suction that in the rare case will begin looking for slime coats on fish than algae.

On reading the link left for me by Wilder I am with you on the Simese/Chinese therory :good:
