Went to my lfs and picked up this fish for a $1. They had no clue what they were so gave me the price of the fish next to them.

:hi: to the forum

You'll need to upload your pic to a hosting site, like Photobucket or Flickr, and paste the IMG code into your post :good:

Looks a bit like a Ctenobrycon spilurus (Silver Tetra) although they usually have a black dot on.

Size might help narrow it down.

It's either a baby tinfoil barb or a baby lemon fin barb :) Either way you're looking at a 14" adult minimum...

I think Paradise is spot on with juvenile tinfoil barb, that was my first thought too because of the size and placement of the eyes.

Here is a googled picture of a juvenile tinfoil barb...

Looks nothing like the tinfoil barbs of that size that I've seen before, wrong body shape. (Young barbs have a longer tail)

How sure are you?

Looks like a young silver dollar (Metynnis argenteus). Does it have any red on the anal fin?

Im pretty sure, the slightly buggy and lower set eyes are definately more 'barb' than tetra.

Also, really young tinfoils are quite stubby (unlike lemon fin barbs which are longer in the body when young).

Also, I think the photo has caught the fish a/ when its got a belly full of food (or its just fat! lol) and b/ in the middle of flicking its tail (look at the top, its curved away slightly).

Here is another photo of juvenile tinfoils that look to be only a bit bigger.

Ya, I can see that now. the SD is too deep keeled.

Easy way to tell is the anal fin, tinfoil barb anal fin is sticky out, silver tetra anal fin runs along the tail, can't really tell in this photo.

Also I agree that barbs have more buggy oout eyes than tetras, but this photo, the eyes aren't that buggy.

JStacks, please let us know about the anal fin, I'm interested to know which this is now.

Thanks for all the quick replies! The anal fin does stick out. The fish is completely silver and has no other colors on the fins. Right now it is about 2.5 inches long.

I think that settles it :good: Tinfoil Barb it is!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tinfoil_barb (Wiki does sometimes have useful information!)

It grows up to 14 inches (35 cm) in length. Tinfoil Barbs have a lifespan of 8 to 10 years.

(although that age is a good ole underestimation as I have two 12 year old tinfoil barbs at work and they are still growing after being kept in too small a tank for too many years)

Hope you are prepared for the big tank mate!

Can't argue with that!

Its a shame that having such a large tank is so time consuming, space consuming and money consuming!!

Because for a pretty common species, tinfoil barbs as adults are really stunning!! I think the best examples I have seen are T1KARMANN's. Huge beasties they are! There are photos in his pinned topic about his 1000 gallon tank! Net is running too slow for my to link it at the moment..
