Hi

Some of my fish are hanging just under the surface of the water. All of them seem to be breathing a little heavy.

My filter is fine and I did a 50% water change a few days ago.

Any ideas?

I am unable to check water stats at current.

Your fish are gasping for air due to lack of oxygen in the water. How long has your tank been established? You need to test your water, is there movement in the water? Ie does you filter produce bubbles? Have you an airstone?

Could be a baterial infection of the gills, do you have good aeration in the tank? Anti bactrial meds would be the way to go, I am treating my fish for the same thing at the moment. Good luck with your treatment

The tank has been running since Aug. I just had to swap my filter as the other one was faulty. I used the old media in the new filter.

The filter makes ripples on the water surface. It is unable to create bubbles.

If I used a air pump how long would I need to use it for it to be affective.

They have only started to do lately. They did this once before when the filter had a low water flow.

Could you not raise the filter level so that the water hits the surface water creating bubbles? Airstone would have immediate results I believe.

Hi Michelle,

What kind of filter is it? I agree with Aimee, you could raise it up a bit so it produces bubbles as the outflow hits the water. Some filters have a wee bubble bit (not sure of the technical term!!).. You can get airstones that you just have to plug staright in, already have the tubing and pump attached. Cheapest one's about £15 I think.

the bubble attachment for filters is called a venturi

it's definately low oxygenation, move your filter to give better aeration and check the temp isn't too high

My tank is on 26 which gives a reading of 27*C. What temp is good for a tropical tank.
