Alright guys, first time poster.

I have had my tank for years, other day did a 50% water change and added sand to the tank.

Re-introduced the fish the other day, all was fine. I have just come in however nd 3 of the 7 fish are at the top of the water almost gasping for air. Any ideas??????

Size of tank in gallons or litres.
How many fish and which type.
Water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.
Is there enough aeration in the tank.

Did you let the sand settle before you added them back to the tank.
Did you match ph and temp.
Did you steralise the sand before you added it to the tank.
Did you wash the sand well before you added it to the tank.

I let the sand settle for a few days and i washed the sand.

Apart from that i don't know anything else am sorry.

There are 7 fish in the tank and its 60l at least. I have one shark, 2 catfish and the rest i dont know. 2 of them are yellow, they are the worst.

What type of shark is it.

Immediate water change and increase aeration.
If there nothing wrong with the shark I would swap them at the lfs for more appropriate fish for your tank size.
Reseach the fish before you buy. Tank size, adult size, and compatiability.

Take a sample of your tank water to the lfs and ask them to write the readings down for you.

The cat fish are they corys.
Can you load a pic up of the fish.

I have just taken them all out the tank mate.

I got all the fish apart from the shark from ma dad's friend who was moving and he never said what they were. Sounds stupid but never had any problems before.

Will the fish be ok in water in a huge bucket for a few days if i change the water daily etc and make sure its 26 degrees ???

How many gallons is the bucket?
I would keep them all in the tank.

You need to get the shark to the lfs as it to big for your tank size.

Can you describe the shark.

Big wide oval shaped head, very dark grey about ten inches long.

You need to load some pics up.
Not sure which shark that is then.

If the bucket is less gallons than the tank then I would put the fish back in the tank.

labarynth fish?
joking do you have an air pump ..they are about 20 quid
HOLD ON A 10 INCH FISH IN A 60 LITRE>?

Wait a minute... You have a 10" fish in a 15g along with 6 others? I would say there isn't enough oxygen getting to everyone because of the massively overstocked tank.

I think you might have gotten the tank size wrong... I can't imagine anybody keeping a ten inch fish in a tank that would probably be barely twice as long as the fish. Can you give us the dimensions of the tank?
Photos of the fish would definitely help, we can ID them for you.

Right tank is 30 inches long, 12 inches deep and 18 inches tall. I've cleared out the sand etc so there is nothing in it.

http://picasaweb.google.com/scottbrazil21/Fish# here is the shark and the yellow fish. I have two of the yellow fish and 2 algae eater's and a really small one.

excuse my total ignorance about not knowing too much.

It could be that there is not enough oxygen in your tank. Try taking water out so the filter makes more of a splash or a waterfall effect.
