There were a lot of hints, and corylover almost had it! A half win. When you said a smaller cichlid and I looked at the stripes again, I was like, "multies? Maybe?" was looking at how to keep them the other day because they might suit my hard water! And they look adorable.

If it's really soft, have otos! They're what I'd like to carry on keeping, but my water's too hard. Guess we all want what we can't have, eh? You have a lot of options with soft water though, so that's good

I do have a lot of options. But I want shell dwellers!
I had otos before, when I first started fish keeping. Thanks to bad advice from an aquarium store owner, I put two in an uncycled tank. When those died, I replaced them with another one. I had that one for about a month, then decided to get a second one. The new one died overnight, and the other one died with him. I'm sure I could keep a school of them alive now, but that first experience with them kind of scarred me. Maybe I'll get some more eventually, but not now.
