IM SO SORRY for posting this!
I have to do a presentation tomorrow at Uni on the reproductive cycle of fish, and I have to talk about embryonic development of fish. I have covered how the fish develop in egg layers, but I seriously have no idea how or where the fry develop in livebearers. I am terrified my tutor is going to ask me and I will not be able to answer (already had that once about chickens - worst day of my life!)

I know about gonads and the gonopodium. But: does the fish have eggs that are fertilized by the male still?... is it just internally instead of externally in the environment - or is it completely different? And where abouts is the gravid spot in relation to the gonads? (just so i could point it out on a diagram I have)

Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks in advance

In a typical livebearer, not all of them, the female merely carries the developing fry but provides almost nothing for them but protection from the surrounding environment. In goodeids, the female provides a support system almost as well developed as a mammal's umbilicus by way of a structure called trophotaenia. Try a quick read here for a bit of understanding http://www.goodeiden.de/html/splendens3.html

Surly your given time to put this together?

So why leave it to other's at sort it out in a panic?

Sorry.

OldMan - thanks a lot. I have scribbled some notes down :)

HelterSkelter - I wrote this presentation in November, had to hand it in and haven't been able touched it since. Restricted to a time and word limit - left out a tonne of stuff I actually wanted to put in. This is just incase she actually mentions it, which knowing her, she will.
