Fish Deaths How Do You Cope?

I know its a sad topic but how do you guys cope with fish deaths? For me the odd tetra isn't a big deal but I do test the water to rule out my error. But loosing expensive fish I really take it personal. Tonight I lost my gold nugget pleco I bought six weeks ago which I really fell in love with water quality is ruled out but I'm still researching why he died. Really put me off expensive plecs for awhile

I get down when I lose tetras and stuff but it really hits me hard when I lose a betta or named fish. My oldest betta is ill atm and I'm pretty torn up. I guess you just cope the way everyone copes with bad stuff in life

Not to sound curt or anything but it's a fish, I move on and try to figure out what I may have done wrong so I don't waste the money the next time around. To me, it's not like it's a family dog or something.

I disagree, if you have a fish with a great little personality you get really attached to them. When Bertie (my clown loach, obviously) got stuck and I thought he was going to die I was really upset

It's not that I don't care...obviously I've had fish I liked more than others. But it's not the same as having a dog or cat that you can interact and be social with in such a manner where more of a emotional bond is formed with the animal. Fish are different. If you're lucky they greet you at the glass and that's about it.

I get really upset if its an unexplained death, or if a fish has been ill and I havnt managed to save it. Thankfully I have not lost any of my really special fish. The one I am dreading the most (and so is my husband because this fish is irriplaceable) is my huge common plec Jethro, who comes when he is called and I pet him just like a dog. He was almost at deaths door when I got him and nursed him back to health, most of my fish interact by swimming upto me and hand feeding but Jethro is a really special boy.

Nope not yet. I do plan on something not found at your LFS at some point. For now though I stay with my angelfish as my favorite. To me they are really elegant. Again, it's not that I don't care. It's just different when compared to more of a family animal like a dog or a cat which I am known to get attached to.

i'll concede that a dog is more sentimental, but a fish can be closer than most think. for me losing a fish is kind of unique in that no one seems to understand why it would upset you. haha like if you say your dog died people seem to sympathize but if you tell someone your fish died they're like ".......so what?"

ive lost three fish so far, one got tangled in roots and i didnt notice and im was upset as i could have noticed and helped the poor oto, another was a fabulous orange balloon molly who just died for no reason and i was kicking myself for that too such a beauty, my first fish to go was a female praecox whos tankmates (which i fed) went up and ate her eyes out

im prolly gonna be very upset when my other fish go, as i love them all, even if they can be a pest at times lol

i also think it would mean alittle more to me to lose my salt fish too, as they have a ton more personality, especially the clowns

I put it down as one of those things. If i have done everything i can to prevent death and the fish still dies i take comfort in the fact there is nothing else you could do to help it. Not lost a discus yet (and i dont plan to) so ask again if i do lose one.

i used to have an angel that lived for almost 2 years, but one day he got really nipped on by my own poor selection. he made it through, and i put him in a smaller tank. he looked a bit lonely, so i bought him another angel and a catfish without knowing that they had carried ich. the new fish died and he fought well for 7 days of parasites, but eventually he passed.he had also been exposed to every other disease known to man before. i was very close to him.

A friend of mine has an oscar that will regularly roll over so he can tickle its belly that dog like enough for you

For me, if it's a tetra or a discus, I still cry.... I love all my fish. The worst deaths have been my bettas-- I get really attached.
