Fish Deaths How Do You Cope?

depends on what you keep in your tank a suppose, tetras mollys etc arent really that special and are easily replaced its the odd kinda fish ur sad about, i know if any of my fish die a wont be too down hearted but if boogy (my black ghost knife fish) dies al be absolutely gutted hes been reared to the best and whenever im at the tank he must be able to smell me coz hes up at me like a shot eating out of my hand etc

I've not lost any fish yet but I do know that I wouldn't/don't base their worth on how much money they cost me. I find that kinda wrong to be honest. No amimal is worth more than another one.

Sorry you can defend that standpoint all you want but you can't compare a 10 cent guppy to a 125 dollar discus. That's like saying if you crashed your old rusty clunker you would be an equal amount upset to crashing your 200,000 dollar sports car . And unfortunately animals are worth more than others some cows are slaughtered for school lunch meat others premium steaks. It the way the world works.

On a fish note thought If its not my fault the fish died and it was a cardinal I'd brush it off easier as I don't really bond to them the same as a discus. Heck I can't even tell my cardinals one from the other 99% of the time.

I usually cope by replacing the deceased fish with something similar. That sounds a bit cruel but I hate the feeling of getting used to something and then have it just disappear. Fortunately, none of the fish I have owned so far have died as a result of my own actions. For instance, a Ghost Koi I had died of mouth rot which was confirmed to be triggered by the trauma it was dealt when a LFS employee dropped it on it's head when in the process of netting it and putting it into a transport bag.

Should a fish die as a result of my actions (touch wood) I don't think I could describe how depressed I would feel!

well i can tell all my fish from each other lol and id be equally upset if i lost my goldbarb (1$) or my boesemani (15$)

but i would aggree that id be less inclined to greive over a recently bought cheap fish than over a recently bought expensive fish, if you know what i mean.

Dont realy get upset with the odd death, sometimes it happens.

But when I lost my enter established comunity due to a heater failure I was pretty upset and I had to get my dad to get the dead fish out.

Out of shoaling fish I've had there's always a few I can identify but it my 25ish shoal of Rasboras I can't tell one from another . I'd also be a lot more bothered when my Angels ate one of my Cardinals if they would have cost me 3.99 like most local shops but for 95 cent it was just a snack

A car is an object, a thing. A fish is a living, breathing, feeling creation. TOTALLY different.

The meat angle won't work with me either. I'm a vegetarian. All cows are the same worth as all other cows. Saying "it's the way the world works" is a very weak argument too. The world works in many evil ways, it doesn't make it right or moral.

I'll give you an example........I had a dog who died about 4 years ago. She was a pedigree and cost us £500. After she died we aquired an old unwanted dog for free and she was just as lovely. She cost us nothing and died abotu 2 years later...........by your "logic" we shouldn't have been nearly as upset about her because she didn't cost us any money, unlike the first?

Sadly your viewpoint is a very common one and I know I'll be a minority in this thread .

I could throw out your example as dogs are all basically all species of dogs genetically are 99% the same even wolves. But you are entitled to your opinion nor do I wish to start a debate especially about Dogs because they for sure become a family member. I just don't get equally attached to a little fish who lacks individual personality and just shoals instead of Discus that follow me around the room. Not that I don't care for all animals just I'm more prone to get attached to fish with personality. If that makes sense? And part of griveing sometimes comes with more expensive fish as they are hardier to replace also.

It's not that I don't care...obviously I've had fish I liked more than others. But it's not the same as having a dog or cat that you can interact and be social with in such a manner where more of a emotional bond is formed with the animal. Fish are different. If you're lucky they greet you at the glass and that's about it.

Man, I am totally with you. Its a fish #39####. When one dies on me, I get it out, check it over to see if anything is suspect on it and then chuck him away.

Fish are fish, most people eat fish whereas we don't eat dogs or cats, well not regularly anyway unless you get a dodgy takeaway...

But I can understand the younger fish keepers getting upset as this may be their first kind of responsibility given to them by their parents.
