We are nearing the end of a fishless cycle and have questions regarding compatibility of fish. We are interested in neon tetras, platys and perhaps 2 or 3 Crossocheilus siamensis and/or some amano shrimp. A lfs told me that tetras and platys are not compatible because platys require some salt be added to the tank. We will start with perhaps 6 to 8 fish. Any suggestions or comments?

Our tank:
29 US gal freshwater; 30 in wide
Marineland Penguin Powefilter 350B - 350 gal/hour
1 55W HO T5 lamp
fully planted in Seachem fluorite
no co2
40th day in fishless cylce: with Ammonia at 5ppm, nitrites to 0 in 15 hours; ammonia to 0 in 12 hrs

Thanks,
ranjohns

WPG abides by T8s not high output T5's!!!

if your lighting were T8 you would be at 1.9WPG

you are approx 2.4WPG and thats not taking into account theyre HO's

George`s tank was initially established using pressurised CO2 at sky high levels, along with several other measures to prevent algae. He only reverted to liquid carbon once the biomass was established.

Good luck with your chosen method :good: , but algae could become a problem that only pressurised CO2, or less light will resolve.

Dave.

as long as it says community fish your alright and platies dont need salt

The compatibility of the fish are fine and as mentioned, the platys don't need salt. As far as stocking, you said only 6 to 8 fish to start. After a fishless cycle, if you can find your full stock, you can easily put them in all at once. Otherwise, with just a partial stocking, the extra bacteria will die off meaning you will have to add additional stock slowly to prevent any spikes and mini-cycles.

Thank you! We'll fully stock at our first opportunity.
