hello, havn't ventured into the freshwater parts of this site for a lonnnnng time. Well basically ive just got myself a job at a fish shop and because id imagine it would be useful to have some knowledge on cichlids if you guys could literaly give me a breakdown of well cichlids and their needs really. Thanks for any help you may provide :)

Here is a VERY brief summary. Malawi Cichlids are broken down into three groups, Haps, peacocks and mbuna. I don't know much about haps or peacocks so I will help you with mbuna. Mbuna are usually bright in color. Most mbuna are semi aggressive or aggressive so stocking can be a little difficult. Most max out at 5 inches (some smaller and some larger). Care must be taken while feeding because mbuna are apt to get bloat if over fed. When aquascaping the tank, a lot of rocks must be used to form caves (which act as hiding places for the non dominant species in the tank). Live plants aren't recommended because cichlids like to dig up plants. Mbuna cichlids can be herbivore, carnivores or omnivores so care must be taking when selecting species to keep together. If aggression becomes a problem, over stocking can be an answer so over filtration is recommended. Certain syno cats and plecos can be added to the tank, but other than that, I wouldn't put anything else in there unless you want it dead.

This is SO brief. You really need to read online articles and books. I would recommend just hanging around and learning little things here and there.

oki dokes. I just had a look around the sticky, opened my eyes a bit and i no know how to pronounce mbuna right haha. I think i will trawl through some peopels tanks to gain some visual knowledge aswell.

If it's a lfs worth anything it will surely have at least a few books, best of which by Ad Konings. I suggest asking them if you could take one home for a while and learn from there along with TFF.

aye shall do they offer some triaing materials aswell...im used to studying anyway always got my revision with school so i can encorporate it.

See im pretty much a pure saltwater reef person so all of this is pretty alien. Things like using playsand, oversotcking and using tapwater are all massive faux pa's in the SW community so its good to know what the 'rules' are in different areas and all that lark :good:
