Im about to purchase some platies for my community tank. What should I know about them? 8)

How big is your tnak? How many fish are in it? What kinda fish are in it? How long has the tnak been set up? Platies are very hardy. They like water around 78 degree's( 28 C). They are liveebarers and are best kept at a ratio of 1 male top 2/3 females. They have babies every 4 weeks. THey will eat thier babies. Also, they will do better with some spirulina.

actually lol, platys prefer 26C but hey to be fair i never really asked one its personaly preference

its a 10 Gallon tank with 1 male betta and 1 albino cory

whats spirulina?

what kind of platy should I get? can i mix them and still breed the them?

I just want to know as much about them as possible so that I can take care VERY GOOD care of them.
sooo what should I know about them? 8)

is it possible to keep one in a tank with my betta?
or just one all by itself in a 10G tank? and get the rest later?

It is entirely possible to keep a platy with a betta. I have 2 tanks with platy / betta mixes in them. The 10 gallon will not let you keep very many at all. Maybe 3 platies (1 male and 2 females) would be OK. Spirulina is a seaweed product. The suggestion is because it is easy to find at your fish store. It is used for things like otocinclus and plecostomus. The betta would be better off at about 26C or a little more and as 5teady said the platies would be good at that temperature also. The correct temperature for a cory depends on which type you have but most will adapt well to about 26C also. Adding fish to a tank slowly is always a good idea, it gives the biological filter a chance to catch up. When you add platies, start with the females first, that way you won't have a male harassing a single female like you would if you started with a male.

I'm keeping a trio in a five gal - I would have said way more on the stocking.

If you are buying from an LFS not a specialist breeder the females will probably be prehit with males from another strain, so either way you are going to get mixed-strain fry. Some can be very pretty.

what else should i know about caring for them? like food habits? aggression? territorial? hardness of water? hardiness? etc
