I still dont get why you people are always complaining about wal-mart. yea some wal-marts suck, and some are great. but many LFS suck also. and many LFS are good also. but when i go out and decide to buy a new fish usually my first place i go is wal-mart. mainly because they are ALWAYS the cheapest place for me. and because all of the LFS around me have either a 1 or 2 day garuntee, while wal-mart has like a 3 month one, and the petsmart has a 2 week one i believe. and if something is going to happen to my fish then it is not going to be in the first 48 hours. it never happens that way for me. its just like with a car that has a `10,000 mile warranty, nothing goes wrong until around the 15,000 mile mark, lol. but anyways, back to my point, wal-mart is just an easier and more pracitcal place to buy fish. there just doesnt seem to be a good reason to go to a LFS that charges more, and has less of a warranty. well thats all i have to say for now my fellow fish keepers. you all have a good day.

at my walmart (closest to me) the fish are expaaansive... the fish are healthy and i belive i always see somone cleaning the tanks and taking care of them and the fish. neons or glowlights there are about 2.50 each!!!! omg!!!! *i thought* and i only go there for fish food and supplies, not such a great selection, but they have what i need. and the 90 day warrenty? dosent work out for me... i bought a black skirt there one time, and it died within 5 days... fish tank was fine when i checked, so i tried to replace it but they wouldnt replace it because of somones lazieness... but thats the only walmart ive been to on this small island of oahu... theres still another 4 i must explore... 5 walmarts on a tiny little island!!!! we only need 1!!!! 2 at the most!!!!!! (off topic)

Its absolutely ridiculous to have a 90 day guarantee. I am guessing that they are pretty much sure that after 3 months most people will either lose their receipt or forget about it. How do you prove that a fish you bought 3 months ago died because of the store you bought it at? I don't even return fish that die the next day, its not the pet store's fault the fish died most of the time. Most of the time if a fish dies its the fault of the person who bought it. Most people that come into the store where I work with a fish return killed the fish themselves. I have even had people try to use the guarantee for fish that have killed each other or jumped out of the tank.

It's been a while. I was really thinking of starting one just for old times sake.

Its absolutely ridiculous to have a 90 day guarantee.

The purpose of the 90 day guarantee is to ensure that if a fish dies the consumer does not feel inclined to give and return all the products they purchased, thus reniging a sale for the store. With the guarantee, the customer will feel as if the store is on their side, and since its replaced for no charge, the consumer will go back to the store and get another fish.

first off, what makes wal-mart an unethnical company? secondly, yea most people would lose their reciepts, but for the few people that keep reciepts, it is a great benefit, as i am one of them.

Livestock inventory has traditionally been used as a draw to promote sales of support equipment and food. It doesn't really matter who is selling the fish we buy. What matters is why. For any reseller, the livestock is a commodity, but there are some that see that commodity as a life, and treat it as such. Even in big dept. or discount stores, one can find responsible fishkeeper, that offer solid livestock, despite our supoosed, expert generalazations. Conversely, I have seen small independent operations that do a good job with one category of fishes, yet neglect another out of dislike or indifference. How many times have seen a great, healthy inventory of bread and butter fishes and odwn in the corner, on the bottom row, a hopeless tank full of tattered mixed cichlids. Many goldfish are mistreated as well. Bottom line, if you can find any store that sticks to what it knows, and offers consistent quality, you have struck a gold mine. If the local WalMart has knowledgable and conscientious employees attending to the fishroom, then so be it. For every bad WalMart/Petco/Petsmart out there there at least twice as many crummy pet shops.

It's mainly the conditions at most of their stores. There have been tons of threads on here about WM. I refuse to go in their stores any more because seeing their tanks just makes me mad (at least the5 near me that I have been in). As someone mentioned, they use fish as a draw to get people in to buy the accessories which the sell very cheap because they are so large and beat their suppliers down on prices. If you buy fish from them, you are taking a huge risk unless you can quarantine them for at least 4 to 6 weeks. Their warehouse fish stock is terrible so even if your local WM is good and clean, the fish that they get in all come from the same place and are most likely sick or diseased in some way.

It is all up to the person doing the fishkeeping. I drive further to a Petsmart becasue the kid has been there for a few years and the tanks and fish ae the best I have ever seen. My local fish store may have 125 tanks but half of them say not for sale which is good at least they know which are sick. Each store is independent even though it is a chain in my experience.
Beware the buyer. Look at the tanks and be chossy.

You do realize that by buying fish at Walmart (whose selection always sucks and health is always questionable) you are putting local shops out of business and ruining the chances of having NEW shops come into your area right?

Its the same sort of people that complain about how they can't find new fish and wonder why but shop at corporate stores who all have the same fish stocked.

while i agree it's nicer to have local shops versus a huge corporate store, in my town the petsmart is far better than the LFS- even though it carries marine and some specialty fish there are always dead fish in the tanks and the staff are extremely unintelligible about fish. my dad claims everytime he sets foot in that particular LFS it smells of death to him. though not often, there are cases where a small LFS is not necessarily always better than a Walmart or Petsmart.

So by your logic its ok to give your money to an unethical company as long as they have low prices. If I knew that was ok I would have bought my fish tanks from someone who stole them. Silly me, I could have saved so much money.

I hate people like you that think that one person being to lazy to do there job at one store makes the entire company a heartless unethical animal killing machine :grr:

and what is that buying stolen fish tanks comment
1. who steals fish tanks????
2. how is that relevant or did I miss the post saying walmart steals thier fish
