Yup, they can. I'd suggest keeping an eye on them for like a week or so. If they're ok by then, it's gonna be cool.

I have had both species, but not in the same tank. A large angel can handle itself with a firemouth. Then again, it depends on the fish. My angels are aggressive and the firemouth was a wimp.

I had the firemouth when I first really got into this hobby. I was told it was a Jack Dempsey. Then I found out what he really was, and he was just a nice medium size guy in the tank.

Good to hear from you Cayman Islands :)

Do you think if I buy the firemouth small and they grow up together they have a better chance?

I would make sure the angel is a little bit bigger. Once they get big there is not a lot in a tank that will stop them except for other angels and fin nippers (tetras, barbs, etc...).

I hate to say it, but I have tried to make compatible tanks, but usually end up buying what I like. I just make sure that I do not over crowd, and watch for meanies. Also, I try to keep fish together that come from the same part of the word, and in your case they do.

Do you think the same methob would work w/ convicts because I know where I can get a really small one?

thankx. I have one angel. should I get another and a firemouth or two firemouths. But I'm sure the two firemouths would have a fun time with the one angel.

My advise would be to stick with the angel fish and not to get a firemouth if you really enjoy the well being of your fish. I have some firemouth's at work and granted they are pretty calm, It all changes with age. cichlids all have very mixed and unpredictable behaviors. One day your angel fish may be trying to swim with no fins because they all got ripped off by a firemouth. Ask the people who said its ok to keep them together how many firemouths or angels or they have kept, or better yet how many angels and firemouths they have kept together? Books and species indexs are no comparison to first hand knowlege! I would definatly say not to keep them together! Just my 10 cents :good:

O.k. thankx everyone. :good: I have just about one more question. If I put my angel seeing how he is about 2 inches long to my other tank which has guppies, fry, female molly and molly fry for a while and let him grow a little while the firemouth is in my 55 gallon tank and after the angel has grown put him back in would that be okay? Sorry the question just popped in my mind. I just really want a firemouth. oh and by the way is it normal for a angel to have a voracious appetite?
