One week ago: 2 of my platies have finrot (no doubt about it) and i'm treating them with interpet anti fungus and finrot, but the treatment is milky white and smells very chemical. Is it supposed to be like that? I wanted to check before I added it to the tank.
I've done a 50% water change and upped the aeration, anything else i can do to help?

Update: one week later and the finrot still hasn't gone. It looked as if it was getting better for the first few days but today the male's tail is back to being frayed and he isn't eating. This has happened more or less overnight as he looked okat yesterday (still had finrot though). The female looks better but still has finrot
I can treat with the fungus & finrot meds again or use the anti internal bacteria, which is best?

No i can get some but I'm sure they have finrot as their fins are frayed at the edges, the one who has it worst is a little listless
I just need to know wether or not to use the meds

platies would like the ph a bit higher than
6.5 its a bit to acid for them also the nitrate
needs to come down a bit say to 5 or 10 do a water change
and see if you can pull the ph up a bit and drop your nitrate
a bit befor adding your fin rot med you said it smelt funny
is it a new bottle or one you've had for a while

i've done a 50% water change
I've had it for a while, just wanted to know what it's supposed to look and smell like
I contacted iterpet and they said their meds had no sell by date if they were kept cool and dark
Have you used it before?

no not that brand have heard of it like
i would say do another water change befor
you use it

what the stats of your tap water by the way

I need to add the meds NOW as i'm leaving
I'll half dose and keep an eye on it, anything strange = massive water change
What should I look out for?

If anyone's used this med before, please say what it looked/smelled like!
Mine looks like milk (clear when dissolved) and smells chemical

Not everyone who comes here is an idiot you know. She/he asked if the medicine was OK, that was it. She/he knows it's finrot and the tank has been running for years. Not being rude but not everyone needs to be jumped on with the cycling lecture. Especially by people no more experienced (yes, like me too). There's a fine line between helping and hindering.

and incidentally, although the PH isn't ideal for Platys it's usually a bad idea to start messing with it. The fish have more than likely adapted to it now (as most can and do) so it's very unlikely to be the problem. Nitrate also depends of what is in a persons tap water. You can't expect someone who has 5ppm in their tap water to keep their tank that low.

Luzi, I'm sorry I don't know. You might find it quicker to ask in the main Tropical Section. Things seem to get read more there

only asked them to do a water change to bring
the ph up a bit and the nitrate down a bit
the fish are already stressed enough and the
ther going to get a load of treatment dumped
on them i was only trying to find thing out before
they went ahead with the medicating without know and
then someone coming back to me tell me that i had killed there fish
how do you think i would feel knowing that and I AM NOT AN IDIOT

I agree with biffer you need to find out the info on the tank before you can comment on how to help them. Ive used the med before and its been milky didnt really notice a funny smell though. i would add it and just keep a eye on it like you said.

you need to find out if the tank is cycled so you know if its a new tank where they have just added a load of fish. not being funny but he was asking to help the OP. Maby 5ppm was a little low but 50 is wey to high 20 i would say ios max so a big water change is still needed. and you say he just asked about the med and didnt need to know anything else then what did your post offer?

Nothing, I didn't pretend I did know though. I suggested Luzi ask somewhere where the post is more likely to be seen. It's very frustrating when you just need an answer quickly concerning your fish health. I had the same thing myself this week.

But yes you are right, I made it sound like 50ppm Nitrate when obviously we know it isn't. I just meant to point out that 5-10 ppm was extream.

and Biffster, I wasn't calling you an idiot. I meant you shouldn't assume Luzi is.

Yh but sometimes you cant give them a quick answer without finding out the info.

I dont think he was assuming she was he was just trying to find out the info needed to answer the question. if he hadn't asked the questions then someone else would have.
