Finishing Up My Tank

Hello everyone!

I have a partially planted 29g tank that's been going for about 2 months. I currently have 3 cory cats, 6 Diamond tetras and one black molly. I am wondering if it would be okay to add one Gourami in the future (I was thinking pearl or dwarf honey) once my plants grow out more and give some solid surface coverage. I recently purchased a dual T5 light for my tank and my Anacharis is growing like crazy!
Anyway, I thought it would be cool to have a Gourami chillin near the surface. Let me know if this is a good or bad idea!

Dwarf gourami like softer water, where mollies like slightly harder water as far as I'm aware. Stocking wise, you would be fine, but I couldn't say the same for water parameters to be honest.

Dwarf gourami have a bad habit of dying for no apparent reason. Iv tried keeping them on and off for years and never had 1 that's lasted more than about 6 months. You'd maybe be better off getting a single pearl, spotted or yellow gourami instead? They can grow quite big, but a 29g tank should be fine.

I always kept atleast 1 gourami in every planted tank I have had, and always had fantastic luck with them. You should be more then ok with 1 in your tank. I'd recommend like ^ said and stay away from a dwarf as they can be hard to keep long term. All my normals lasted very long. I have had honey gouramis in an old tank and the one grew very large. Current tank had 2 opalines and they were beautiful and hardy fish, i returned them because they were being aggressive towards each other and my other fish.

I, too, will add that I have had no success with Dwarf Gouramis in my tank. Have tried three of them over the past two years, and, in each case, they would die with no apparent disease symptoms, and very little warning.

My Dwarf Gourami lasted a few years, he eventually grew very bloated and died (I think from disease). I currently have 1 in a 29 gallon, had him since he was a juvenile, hes looking fine.

Might not always have the same luck due to over breeding etc...

But overall, I think either the Dwarfs or regular gouramis are a great addition to a community tank.

If you want a fish that chills near the surface, try getting killi fish. They grow pretty large and have great color.

I love my dwarf gourami. He's the only fish I have that I'll be sorry to see go. Had him for ages now and not had any problems with him. He's such a character. Doesn't just swim around like the other fish. You can almost see his thought processes.

If you're thinking about getting one, go for it! Some people have said that it hasn't worked out for them, but ultimately I think the best thing to do is try it. As others have said they can die for no apparent reason, so yours will either work out or it won't.

Yeah totally! The Dwarf Gourami I originally had was one of my first and favorite fish, possessed a huge personality. Very graceful with a ton of expression.
