We have just finished cycling a 45gal tank. Our neighbours had just brought a pair of Orange Sailfin Mollies. A molly in the tank attacked and killed one, then set on this one.

We have taken it, and put it in our tank (first fish in). This is different to what the books and websites say about should only go into a mature tank, but has more chance in our tank than theirs.

Book also says should be kept in min of one pair. As a new tank should we get another one, or wait and see how he gets on? The Orange Sailfin is a lovely looking fish, but the book says reaches 18cm so bigger than originally planning on.

These were what we were planning to put in over a period of time, platies, zebra danios, maybe albino corry and glass catfish, maybe a pair of rosey or golden barbs and a bristlenose or suckermouth catfish. Does this sound a good listing and will they get on with the molly?

Also when book says min "one pair", are they saying need one male and one female for them to be content, or just two of the same sex to settle them / company?

Usually a pair means a male : female pair. Then male apparantly displays a lot to a female but I have never kept them. I have no doubt that your one sailfin would be "happier" with a mate but that doesn't mean you have to go down that route. However. As you have pointed out you are looking at a 6" fish eventually so you will take about 12" of your 45" avaiable with just 2 fish.
