Finaly! :d

I adopted the idea for a few reasons - id get fed up waiting for a shop assistant to become free to ask them about a particular fish, or when I did get the information it was total rubbish! Now I do all my own research before I buy!

Do you not feel silly when you whip the pen and paper out though?

Not at all, I dont make a huge thing of it - just quickly jot the name down - no one notices! And even if I did feel silly id sooner do that than be unkind to the fish im buying by getting the wrong thing and wasting my money in the bargain!!

I did exactly the same thing Saturday afternoon at our LFS. I was even asking the guy there questions and writing stuff down as he told me. It seemed quite natural to me. Brought the notes home, researched all the fish we liked and have already started to change the tank for Cory's.

They did look at me a bit strangely when I got the camera out

Yes, I do the same thing, have no hesitation taking a few notes and yes, I do feel silly sometimes but I always just remind myself that a short time after everyone else has left the shop they are off to their own lives and wouldn't remember it anyway.

Knowing what your shops have to offer and researching them on the web is very valuable. I once figured out that full 3/4s of the fish wall at a PetSmart consisted of fish that made me shudder when I thought of beginners trying to deal with them!

Many congrats on persisting through a 4-month fishless cycle and many thanks for sharing that here. It is important for other beginners to hear the message that time is ultimately on your side if you are just patient - despite all the unknowns that may happen!

I may think about actually doing that and whipping the notepad out some time. It seems pretty understandable and it avoids stupid postage and packaging costs.

I whipped a note pad out twice, made a load of notes, came home, researched, composed a list and had changed my mind like 10 minutes later :(

But I'm happy now, its so awesome to just kick back with the g/f after a day at work and just watch them chase each other around.

Can't wait to get some colourful ones in there now!

Im starting out with my first tank ( still cyceling )went to the lfs last week spent about an hour looking at the fist seeing what i liked tryed to remember names and came home too look them up i shall take a pen and papper next time good idea i did feal abit silly leaving the shop after an hour without buying anything

Update:

After 2 weeks, I have been testing my water, and Ammonia and Nitrites both at 0 still. Original 3 Zebra seem to be very happy. Today I added 4 more and 2 assasin snails.

Tank now has:

7x Zebra Danio
2x Assasin Snail
5x Line plants

I've done the water change today. One thing I have noticed is now I seem to have disturbed the water a little. There are lots of "bits" floating around in the tank. They are tiny, almost like flakes of dirt. I got a lot of them out with the gravel pump sucker thing but there are still loads floating around.
