So I finally got my own way and wrapped hubby around my little finger and got myself a new tank!

Here it is the first night I set it up with the lights on:

The following morning without the lights - water now starting to clear:

I will add some more pictures of the 3 Pink Convicts that I added last night!

Hi tracyw, so I assume you moved over the mature media from your existing filter that had been caring for the smaller tank you were discussing in the Welcome section? Its wonderful you have found the much needed extra space for these large fish!

If you did indeed move the media from the old filter to the new one (and in any case) it will be particularly important to monitor your water as if in a "fish-in cycling situation" since the biofilms of the bacterial colonies may suffer some shock from such a move. This could mean they would stop processing the ammonia into nitrite(NO2) and/or the nitrite into nitrate(NO3) and you could have an excess of one or both of those poisons temporarily.

If you simply moved the old filter with them and -added- the new filter as an additional filter then there is less worry although its still a good idea to do daily monitoring of your main stats (ammonia, nitrite, pH, nitrate) in any new tank or move situation. Good luck!

Ah cool it looks awesome :D Really like the rocks you have its really going to suit the CA cichlids we were talking about :)

I think what I suggested about moving the media over to the new filter should work but like I said keep an eye on the levels with your test kit :)

Thanks again for all your help Wills! And thanks for the testing tip Waterdrop!

I can't wait for the tank to start looking a bit Fuller!

Do you think I need more rocks or anything in there at the moment? I don't want it to look too cluttered!

Also if I add

1 x JD
3 x Pictus Catfish
8 x Blind Cave Tetras

will I need to add more rocks/caves/bogwood?

I did move my old filter media to the new filter, so will be keeping a close eye on levels and no doubt be on here again seeking advise!!!

Looking good! Can't wait to see the pictures of the Convicts :good:

James.

Also results from my water tests this evening:
PH - 7.8
Ammonia - 1.0
Nitrite - 0
Nitrate - 40
how are those levels looking?

Tank & convicts look lovely :good:

Has regarding your levels, ammonia at 1.0 is not good, best do a large w/c to bring this back down to at least 0.25ppm,if not zero would be ideal :good: this will also lower your nitrates.

Thanks for that, will get onto it straight away, will retest tomorrow and post results up here
