As many from chat, and the more perceptive of you too, will know, I have a large interest in the marine frogfish (Genus Antennarius). Well, I finally got a frogfish, and it turns out the nice lfs man got an Antennarius striatus, or striated frogfish. And he's a stunning fish, around 2" now and should between double and treble in size.

Hopefully I will have a feeding vid tomorrow, but for now, here are some bag shots, some close ups, and a shot of his tank, in situ. Sadly, I could not get any shots of him "luring", though he was definitely doing doing this when I arrived home from going out this afternoon.

And then wandered off in search of food.

As an aside, one should note that frogfish can eat fish up to twice their own size, depending on species.

No feeds yet, will give him some shrimp tomorrow as I may as well treat all the tanks to some live food. Will try him on Lance fish towards the end of the week (probably Friday). Frogfish love to eat and many die from overeating.

Wot an ugly bugger

Throw a guppy in, that will keep him happy

:good:

Not the prettiest of fish, but he certainly is interesting and IMO, interesting beats pretty any day! I can just imagine him standing there posing for a picture then wandering off for food, sounds like my dogs!

No guppies, though I occasionally wonder about bettas... :shifty: Would be cool to watch him lure

Shame the blighters would cause a fatty build up on the liver. SW shrimp only for this guy until I have him eating dead.

Indeed I do. Some lovely feeding vids on the web, though there are too many with people feeding goldfish, which is an easy way to kill a froggy early :/

Would love to keep the giant frogfish (A. commersoni) which at 16" could take down some pretty large prey. I am on the look now for another, though am unsure of which species to look for. I would like an Antennarius maculatus, though I fear this may end up as prey for an adult A. striatus.

Will have to see what lfs man can get.

Have heard my LFS moaning on about people feeding Goldies to Marine Fish - Only to see him do the same

A couple of clowns would look good in that tank as well

Nice expensive meal

What an awesome critter  hope he settles in well :good:

Not the prettiest of fish

wow on the contrary I think it's stunning !

Ps: just seen that vid - how cool is that ?!

my lfs learned the hard way about their mouths the last time he had one, made the mistake of putting it in with a red-faced batfish that was pretty much double its size.

Before long there was only one fish; that had eaten a very expensive feeder!

Cheers Bloo. He seems fine at the mo. They can be a bit sensitive when they are first around, so will have to keep an eye on things, though I have plenty of spare water for doing a change if needs be.

hehe the picture of the canoe on your wall, my friends mum had the same picture in her hallway

anyway lovely tank very strange and interesting fish there :good:
