I've been trying for ages to get a decent photo of my longfin black skirt tetras!

Beautiful!
Aren't widow tetras fin nippers though?

Nope, not when their numbers are large enough. I have 11.

Very nice photo! And great looking fish you have there, congrats!
I love the long tail, and how see-through it is - just lovely!

Nice looking fish.
I agree with Dreamertk, worthy of FOTM.
Why did it take so long to get a pic?

Thanks, everyone! It wouldn't measure up to a seahorse, but he is a looker. These guys bop around the tank constantly and it was really difficult to get a shot that was in focus. I finally got my camera settings right and just stayed glued to the glass for about 15 minutes! I got a bunch of great shots, actually. Here's a few more:

Interesting fish, I like this photo, as for me it has movement in it :)
Not 100% sure if this is what the others mean by second photo i.e. your second photo overall?

I think so, and I like the movement as well. If I entered FOTM, this would be the one, I think. But for sure I'd wait until next month's contest!!

Well as per usual, I'll go against the grain and say my favorite photo is the first one you posted.  Mostly because there's 2 fish in it and neither is blurred at all.  In fact I'd vote for it next month, hint-hint ;)

Yes, these guys are fin nippers when kept in small groups.  Quick story:  My 73 year old father bought 2 each of the regular Black Skirt Tetras, Serpae (Red Minor) Tetras, Black Phantom Tetras, and Lampeye Tetras.  All were roughly the same size but the Black Skirts ruled over all others.  Not to the point of ripping them to shreds but it was clear they were the bosses of the tank.

Oh, and back on topic, you should try increasing the contrast just slightly and reducing the "speckling" of the photo before entering it.  In Photoshop, as well as many other photo editing programs, there's a "despeckle" tool that blends out the grainy effect.  The contrast would be perfect if you can get the background darker while enhancing and brightening the silvery sheen of the fish.
