So i've finally finished my filtration system which was a sump tank with a HOB overflow box. Everything was homemade basically. I got everything running in is all in tip-top condition. There's just a problem bothering me lately that i'm not really sure how to fix. Before i start trial-and-error experiments, i thought it would be a better idea to ask you guys on what you did to silence your overflows. Specifically, the problem i have is that my one inch pvc pipe from my outer HOB overflow is running straight down to my sump. There is no angle to the pipe, just directly vertical. Once it reaches the sump it takes a sharp pvc pipe-turn to the sump, and i think that's where the main sound disturbance comes from: The water free-falling about a meter-ish and hitting the bend in the pvc. The sound from the mouth of the pipe in the outer overflow box i kind of cured using a bio-ball. (I've read about the stockman standpipe and i might get to that later.) Anybody have any ideas on what to do about this?

PS: I saw a video a few months ago about making the water flow down at quite an angle, and if i remember correctly that's the way he cured his noise issue. I was wondering, if i did this would the flowrate down to the sump still be the same compared to what i have now? Oh, and another question. I didn't install a ball valve for this pipe, would a ball valve help kill the noise?

Thanks
