hi guys, just wondering the tank im buying ciomes with an internal filter and an undergravel filter? i plan on using sand so i know the undergravel filter cant be used but would it be worth removing the internal filter and using an external? what would be the benefits?

Cheers Stephen

Externals hold a lot more media, so you can stock (slightly) more heavily, or with larger, messier fish. Of course, they free up space in your tank and are out of sight as well, and are a bit easier to maintain than internals.

Is it a Juwel tank? If it is, then the filter is perfectly ok for a standard community of smallish fish, but I think most people do end up taking them out.

I find the internal filters less easy to clean and have always removed them for an external.

thanks

That's a very good question, and one I don't know the answer to!

Hopefully someone who does will be along shortly, or you could ask in the planted tank section :good:

Just keep in mind that external filters generally cost a lot more money. But I feel the added capacity for media is worth it!
