Hi guys. I'v just gone from gravel to sand and was wondering how close to the sand the filter intake can be (minimum), as I'm worried that any sand drawn in to the filter will damage the impeller/ taps/ seals ect. The tank is 260l and 4ft long, the external filter is about 1000lph.
Anyones experience or comments would be appeciated.

It needs to be a couple of inches up.

Sand is less of a worry with externals anyway, as most of them have the water drawn up through the filter, so any sand that does get in stays at the bottom of the canister and won't get near the impeller  :)

i have a HOB filter and the intake is about 3 inches above the pool filter sand substrate with no issues

Ditto FM externals usually keep all the large debris at the bottom of the canister. Which is a good job because my oscar has taken to spitting gravel at the intake and I keep finding bits of fine gravel in my filter.
