Hi,fairly new to the hobby and I,m thinking of getting a fluval rio 125/180,and thinking of adding an external filter to go in the cabinet, anyone had any experience of doing this?is it easy I,m no diy expert, any recomendations on a filter to use, thanks

Externals filters are a lot easier to set up than you think, I run an external filter on my Juwel Rio 125. If you buy it new just don't stick the internal one in!

All is required is that you connect the hoses to the filter and to the top of the tank and place the outlet and intake on, really easy. I prefer having externals because of the space it gives you in the tank, they are also a lot easier to service for me.

can you recomend an external filter for a fluval rio 125,could Iask which one you have?

I have an All pond solution 1400L/H + 9w UV filter currently, I did have a Fluval 205 but it wasn't powerful enough for the 125 litre tank. All pond solution filters are good quality but in many peoples eyes and unproven brand as they generally make copies of other filters but it functions brilliantly for me. The Fluvals are great quality too but pricey, however much more well known and proven to work, I would recommend a Fluval 305 at the minimum for a Rio 125.

There are lots of filters about the right size for a tank that big. Check out the available models and their reputations. Rena, Fluval, Eheim and lots of others make filters for that size. I have lots of good experiences with Rena XP series filters but other people have equally good experiences with other product lines. Since your tank is not very large, almost any of the name brand manufacturers will have a filter rated to filter it.
