Hi, at the moment i have a 'block' filter-one of the ones in the corner of the tank.
i hate this. my tank is small as it is and to have a massive black thing in the corner is really not my image
does anyone know what thoose filters that have like pipes going in and out are called? rather than a block one.

At that size, I would use the Rena XP1 filter. My experience with that product line has been quite good and their price is attractive, at least around here, compared to the Eheim filters. I am sure the Eheim filters work just fine but after many years of using the other filters, I have found no reason to spend the extra money on them. When you decide to move to a canister / external, be sure to come back with a good description of the mature filter you already have so we can help you transfer your cycled bacterial media to the new filter.

Depends on where you are from oldman, your in USA i believe?

In UK I have found eheim to be at least $30 equivalent cheaper than the rena XP1, I keep reading posts from people saying its not worth paying the extra for an eheim but they must be charged at a premium in other contries because I'm always thinking to myself that eheims are just as cheap as any of the other big branded manufacturers

I got my new eheim 2217+ for £80 which I believe is about $120-$130?

I quite agree. the Ehein is, both, more effective. and a longer lasting filter. it also flows, much, closer to the box claim than the rena.

but i suggest the 2017. but either eheim would fit the bill. ( they are cheap enough too, if you look)

Me too! Was it you I spoke to before?

Lol,

Yes I meant oldman was in USA I believe, I think they must pay more for eheims over there than other brands whereas over here in UK eheims are priced pretty much the same as any of the other top brands.

I'd recommend the eheim 2213+ for your tank, can be bought for about £50 online, I'd make sure you get the '+' model as it includes shutoff taps for the inlet and outlet pipes making maintenance easier

Eheims are sold with a stiff premium price here. The Rena is about the same price as a Fluval but the older Fluval externals had such a bad reputation that I never tried one. The Marineland C-series are about the same price or a bit more than the Renas and look exactly like the Tetra-tec filters. even the internal pictures I have seen of the Tetra-tec filters look just like my Marineland C-series. The Tetra-tec brand name is also not available here but I don't think I am missing anything when an identical filter is available. I get the impression that a Tetra-tec filter is a cheap alternative in the UK. Herein the US, only the Eheims are more expensive than the Marineland C-series, which are indistinguishable from a Tetra-tec, at least from the pictures.

so to sum it all up if your going to buy an external filter for your size of tank the best 1 to buy would be the eheim 2213+ or the 2017

forget the rest buy the best
