I know, this is in the wrong section and it should be posted in the hardware section, but this section gets more traffic, and that is why I am posting it here.

I am getting a 40 Gallon Breeder tomorrow afternoon. The dimensions ar 36"x17"x18". I have a Aquatech 5-15 HOB filter that I plan on using on this tank. I know that it is no where near as big of a filter as I need. I plan on buying a sponge filter to run alongside with the HOB filter.

Would this work? I really don't want to spend a fortune on an external filter and would rather stick with something like this.

What do you plan on stocking your tank with?

So far, I plan on this:

1 Angel fish
1 Keyhole
1 Cockatoo Apisto
8 Corys(not sure what type yet)
10 Tetras (thinking bloodfin)

I have a sponge filter in that fashion, but you can get a much better one for cheap. Have a look here.

What's the difference between the two? I mean, I know that they look different (lol) but what makes it better? Not to sound rude or anything.

With sponge filters, it comes down to surface area. The larger the sponge, the more bacteria it will hold. If I were to guess, the one from ebay is small, too small for the purpose you have for it. The ones I linked are bigger and designed to work in a larger tank for the same price. It's a no brainer to me, but it's your choice. I just thought I'd recommend a better product.

Yes, I have used that link. What should the approxamite surface area be for a sponge filter in this tank?

It's hard to tell for sure because sponge filters are made from different types of material, and that varies from brand to brand. For a 40 breeder I would recommend the H-IV, or 2 of the H-II, but this isn't the only supplier of sponge filters. You could try your luck with Aquabid.
