Filter question.
Probs simple as pie to you lot but I'm confused :)

Blah blah........

I'm doing a cycle (with fish) ..

.. Changing my water everyday..
What do I do with the filter sponges?.. Leave them in?.. Or clean them in the water I've just syphoned?

La la?

Thank you please :good:

xx

Rach, you will need to rinse out your filter media whenever the flow starts to drop off. That is as true during a cycle as it is at any other time. If you don't go crazy scrubbing the media it won't hurt the cycle at all. For a fish-in cycle, the primary concern needs to be the fish. If you keep the fish safe, the cycle will happen on its own.

Also, don't clean more than 1/2 of the sponges at the same time. (less than 1/3 if possible).

Cleaning is needed to maintain flow rates, but even washing them in water taken from the tank, it does remove some of the bacteria.

As long as you leave at least half untouched at a time, you will be fine.

All you have to do is give the entire sponge a good squeeze to remove trapped detritus. You'll lose very little, if any bacteria from the sponges and any bacteria losses will soon be replaced.

Agree with all the above advice. :)

Hope you are able to maintain ammonia and nitrite below 0.25ppm with your water changes?
