I noticed my 10 gallon was getting cloudy so I did a 30% water change, then today it didnt clear up at all and I realized my filter wasnt working. It was jammed I guess but I fixed it. Is there anything I can do to clear the water up quicker besides more water changes?

I thinkk you should be more worried about your fish. Your beneficial bacteria most likely have died off in the filter, causing another cycle.

Aerobic bacteria (beneficial ) goes dormant when it isn't fed or oxygenated for long periods of time. When filters go out the build up of ANaerobic bacteria start to take over your filter. That is the stinky sewer smelling bacteria. This does not mean the beneficial bacteria have died off. If the beneficial bacteria are kept wet they will just go dormant. Turning on your filter will kill off the anaerobic bacteria. Anaerobic bacteria live only in an environment that is void of oxygen. Therefore, turning on the filter kills anaerobic bacteria and revives the beneficial bacteria ( aerobic ). However, anaerobic bacteria produce hydrogen sulfide and methane. That's the bad odor you smell. Hydrogen sulfide is toxic to your fish. I would remove the water in your filter if it has been off for over a day.

Very interesting. Fishing4exotics I'd be very interested to hear what you think about Stress Zyme and Biospira. PM me if you want.

I made sure to empty the filter water, I replaced 1 part, cleaned the rest in a small bucket of tank water, put stress coat for my fish and hopefully all is well, thanks.

Ok so mini cycle-happening

What I can do is move my platys and corys to my 29 gallon (if the gravel is ok for them-it isnt sharp). Im scared to put the neons in there because im afraid the ABF might try to get a nice snack. And I can put my betta in my 2.5 gallon thats planted with java moss and waiting for fry. Should I do this?

Why are you moving the fish out? That will only disrupt the cycle unless you are wanting to do a fishless mini-cycle. I recommend that you do not move your fish. What are your readings ATM. If your levels get high then just do a partial water change much less stress on fish that way. You may want to look into ammo-lock and NI-lock if you can find it. Finally take your filter cartridge from your 29 and swish it gently in your ten, as long as there are no known diseases in the tank. If you are worried about diseases then pour some water into a bucket and add dechlor. 10-15 minutes later swish your filter cartridge in that and pour that water over your ten gallon filter cartridge and into the ten gallon. This will expose the fish in the ten to any diseases from the 29 but your planning on doing that anyway and it will prevent the diseases from moving from the 10 to the 29. PM me if you want more help. OH btw I'm not the person to ask about the neons. I think they'll probably get eaten but I know little about butterfly's. Finally if you still decide to move the fish use a bucket with 1/4 of the water from the ten in it. Put the fish in the bucket and every 15 minutes add a couple cups of water from the 29. This will adjust them to the temp and to the PH of the 29. Put a blanket over the bucket when not adding water then just net them out. I hope this helps.

I changed my PM from 1/2 the water to 1/4 of the water. That's be a big bucket. =)

I would tend to agree with Torrean about not moving the fish. If the ammonia and nitrite levels are manageable (under 1 ppm), I would just do daily water changes as in a normal cycle with fish. If you remove the fish, then you will have no ammonia source (waste) and the bacteria will begin to die off from lack of food unless you fishlessly complete the cycle with ammonia.

Ok well here are the stats
New update of stats
ammonia-8.0
nitrites-.25
nitrates-between 40-160 the test is hard to tell.

ive been doing water changes too

OK from the PM you sent me your ammo is at 8, That is not good. First I would like to know the PH of the tank and the PH from your tap. If they are within 1-1.5 degree then do the following. Do a 25% water change now. In 2-3 hours do a 5% water change then in 2-3 more do a 10% water change. Go back and forth between 5 and 10 % every few hours until it straightens out. You may want to move the betta to the 2.5 and maybe the cories to the 29. I don't know how they will fair with the aggression from a butterfly. Should be okay for a few weeks but I don't know...ask inchworm. Okay so move the betta and maybe the cories and do a 25-30% water change. Then do a 5 then a ten then a five then a ten until your levels get lower. like ammo 1. After you change about 45-50% of the water go to sleep then get up and change another 15% then 10 then 5 the alternate again until levels go down. Good luck and wait for confirmation from another member if you can.

The ph is about 7.0 Im not sure of the tap-I use the tap water purifier but I could test it. If it is close, ill do that. I definitely wanna move the cories out of there-they are my pride and joy. I feel for the platys though-2 are pregnant. Thanks for your help.

If the PH is really close you might be able to do a larger water change which would help matters a lot. Please check your tap

Toreans water regime sounds good. Difficult, but good lol! :p

If your filter has two cartridges in each filter, why not place half of the filter media from your 29 into your 10? That would help alot. As you'll know, a reading of 8.0 Ammo is really high.

Can you swap some media?

My 10 gallon filter has 1 cartridge the 29 gallon is a 3 part system. But 1 of them was just replaced yesterday
