Heya everyone, I was just wondering what kind of Affordable canister filer I should upgrade to from my current filter, I'm currently using a Emperor 280 HoB filter.

Get an external filter.
Look at EHEIM 2213, or a JBL e701.

How can you recommend a filter without knowing what size thank the OP has?

I have a 40 gallon tank
It is currently a community tank with swordtails, guppies and some diamond tetras, but with my growing interest in Cichlids I will probable swap it to a cichlid tank eventually.

He has a filter with a capacity of: 280 GPH .
I am recommending filters with similar capacity.
EHEIM is expensive, but is well know for its reliability. I have 2 eheim filters, and no complains at all.
JBl filters received lots of good reviews, consume less energy and are cheaper. A great alternative.

Anyway, let us know your aquarium specifications and for sure we can give a better recommendation.

When you say you may change it to a cichlid only tank do you mean mbuna cichlids? if so you would need to stock the tank quite heavy and need to over filter the tank due to the amount of waste the fish would create.

Do you have a budget in mind for the filters?

I'm thinking German Rams

Possibly the gold ones and the blue ones, they looks really nice.

Uhmm, my budget for the filters is probable 150 bucks.

I want to increase my filtration and get powerheads and Live plants, I'm willing to spend up to 250 dollars on everything.
