my filter seems to only be flowing steadily trough the left side...(this was the best pic i could get...) i dont want to touch the media though because I'm currently doing a fish in cycle...you can also see the filter is drawing up more water then it filters, allowing it to over flow through the middle...is there anything i should do? I've already set my cycle back by switching the filter pads almost three weeks ago so I really don't want to end up starting again!!! Thanks

There could be a few things wrong here. First off it looks like a penguin filter, is that right. Also is it new or used, if it's used it could just be wearing out. Also the main pipe in the middle may not be down far enough in the filter itself so you may want to try pushing it down. With my filters similar to yours I know when they get dirty they do what yours is doing but it doesn't sound like your is dirty if its still a new set up. If worse comes to worse you could always get another filter and run both until your new filter matures. :good:

Its actually a brand new whisper 60, idk if they are made by penguin, maybe so...also the main pipe is as far down as it will go. if i was to get a new filter, what kind should i get? it a 55 gallon tropical freshwater...Thanks for the help!

Ive got the same size tank and I did have that filter. Did you happen to get yours at walmart as a kit, thats what I did. You may want to try and take the filter pads and tube and such out and put it all back together again. With it being a new filter there may be something not put in there right. You might want to check the instructions to make sure you have it put together right. In my filtration I run two filters that would be able to filter a 100 gallon. I've got a penguin and my other is a canister filter. If you were to buy another filter I would suggest a penguin or a canister. I really like my canister filter very quit and works good only downfall is there expensive.

Like I said first thing I would do is take everything out and check the instruction book and put it back in. Also you may want to check your water level I know when my water level drops the filters don't run right. I like to have my water level in the take above the bottom of the black trim so you cant see the water level.

ps: I would stay away from aqua clear filters. I have had three one just stopped working and the ohter two started leaking. I have bought two recently to replace my leaking aqua clears and I got whisper ones that go on the inside of the tank. There very quit only downfall is seeing how they go in the tank they take up some room. :good:

I didnt get it at wal mart, but its essentially the same thing, i got it at my LFS when it was on sale(cheaper than wal mart lol) but i really dont wanna have to take it appart, when i put it together i read the instructions a few times prior so i wouldnt have a problem, lol look where it got me...but ill look into getting a new filter and maturing the media without fish in a 10 gallon tank so i can swap em out...Thanks for the help!

Edit: also water level not an issue...it has been very stable since day one, almost a month now, and this problem just came about maybe 2 days ago

NP! :good: You wouldn't have to move you fish if you got a new filter. You would just run both in you 55 until you new one matures then you could get rid of the old one. I would take the old one back to you LFS and tell them it doesn't work and get a new one. You could ask for some media from there tank like a filter pad or something and put that in your new filter. :good:

You could check into a Tetratek EX700 cannister and see how cheap you could get one. It could be run as a second filter.
