Filter Recommendations

My good lady wife has now set her heart on purchasing the Seashell Aquariums porthole tank from MA (see thread below)

This tank comes with just tank, the porthole "frame" and a cabinet. My two current tanks both come complete with built-in filter and lighting (Aqua-One). There is no sensible place to put an external filter that I can see, so I think it's going to have to be an internal.

What's the best internal filter for a 120l tank?

The Fluval U series are very good.

id go for the older [fluval] plus series.. much easier and way more reliable

ps, doubt that you would find a new one in many shops now, but some do! have a look on ebay x

Both the U series and + series from Fluval are very good. I like the added features of the U series like the spraybar for even flow, but the + series are bullet proof from experience. There is usually a couple of them for sale in the classifieds on this site so have a look. The models you would be looking at of the tank turns out to be about 120 litres would be the U3 and 3+.

P.S. there is no way i would be paying £450 for a 120 litre tank!!!

The plus range are far more reliable than the U range in my experience, and yes the U has a spray bar for planted tanks but you can get more media in the Plus models.

If it were just a glass cuboid, I would agree with you, however this is what it looks like.

She Who Must Be Obeyed has decided that it looks a lot nicer than our current grey plastic and glass aquarium, and will fit in with our decor much better. Since it is nearly twice the capacity of the existing tank, who am I to tell her she's wrong?

I just paid £280 for the 5 foot listed in my signature. its also an MA range tank, made by seashell. 2nd hand, but virtually brand new, was used for a lizard for 6 months.

Now tell me you are getting a good deal.

PS, i highly recommend you get a "normal" shaped tank and not the cube shape, they are a bit of a pain to access, plant/scape and dont give you a very big surface area for bottom dwelling fish. Lots of fish like to "burst" swim around tanks when the need takes them, in the cubes they can only go in circles. MA do a very nice oak cabinet that has a wine rack built into it below it. Now thats a much better idea eh?

I never said it was a good deal, I was merely pointing out that it wasn't just a bog-standard 120l glass box, and that Mrs Lock Man has fallen in love with it.

Now if you can find me 2nd hand porthole tank for £280, I'll (A) be very impressed and (B) be very grateful.

Not porthole but still nice and i bet it wont sell. could probably get for £250 without being too cheeky. It does have a filter afterall.

I think your porthole choice is actually really nice. Yes it's quite expensive but it will last you, and if you're prepared to pay that it's your business. Lightly stocked with chilled out midwater fish, and planted in the middle it'll look really good! I don't think you'll need a U series filter though, try to find a Plus on eBay, less bulky.
